Black Caps break Zim hearts

Bracewell and Vettori script late turnaround in Bulawayo Test

Brendan Taylor: century in vain as Zimbabwe collapsed after tea on final day

Doug Bracewell picked up a debut five-wicket haul as New Zealand secured a 34-run victory on an exciting final day of the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

Rookie seamer Bracewell finished with 5-85 and veteran spinner Daniel Vettori took three wickets in the evening session as Zimbabwe, chasing 366 for victory, were reduced from 265-3 at tea to 331 all out.

There were just under eight overs remaining in the match when Vettori (3-71) trapped last man Chris Mpofu lbw to complete the turnaround.

Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor had earlier looked to be leading his side - playing just their third Test after a six-year absence - to a famous win.

Taylor hit 117, his second Test century, and received sound support from Tino Mawoyo (52) and Tatenda Taibu (63) during stands of 96 and 108 for the third and fourth wickets respectively.

Catalyst

But his departure to Chris Martin's second ball after tea, caught in the covers, was the start of a dramatic final session as the Black Caps claimed all seven of the wickets they required.

Vettori removed Taibu for 63 from a top-edged sweep and Bracewell followed up with the scalps of Regis Chakabva (5), Njabulo Ncube (14) and Ray Price (4) during an inspired spell.

The 21-year-old, son of former Test cricketer Brendon Bracewell and nephew of ex-New Zealand spinner and coach John Bracewell, had Chakabva and Price caught behind and bowled Ncube.

At 329-8 with 10 overs remaining, the home side's hopes rested on Malcolm Waller's shoulders.

But Waller - who made 72 not out in the first innings - was lbw for to Vettori, who then finished off proceedings with the opening delivery of his next over by accounting for Mpofu in the same fashion.
