LV=County Championship: Weather denies Warwickshire run chase

Chris Woakes: Claimed five wickets before bad weather stopped play

An unexpected improvement in the weather held out brief hope of a positive result on the final day of Yorkshire's LV=County Championship match against title-holders Warwickshire at Headingley.

But with Warwickshire requiring a further 171 off a minimum of 34 overs, bad light and rain returned and the game ended in a draw with each side collecting nine points.

The result meant that Yorkshire increased their lead at the top of the First Division table to 10 points but their opponents really needed to a win to get back in contention.

The visitors were in the stronger position going into the last day but heavy overnight rain had left parts of the outfield saturated and the weather forecast suggested there could be no action at all.

Yet conditions improved throughout the morning and play was able to commence at 2.40pm at which stage 48 overs remained to be bowled.

Lost wicket

Yorkshire's lead was only 141 when they resumed on 148-7 and it was not long before they lost a wicket, Ryan Sidebottom whipping Chris Woakes through mid-wicket for four and then losing his off-stump when he tried to repeat the stroke off the next ball.

Andy Hodd, who had resisted doggedly on the previous evening, cut Boyd Rankin to the rope but he soon ran out of partners as Rankin mopped up the tail with two wickets in three balls.

A short delivery to Patterson was fended to Ian Westwood at short leg and Jack Brooks was unable to control another bouncer which flew to Keith Barker at leg gully.

Woakes' five-wicket haul cost him only 42 runs and Rankin also emerged with the excellent figures of 4-29. Hodd headed for the pavilion with his wicket still intact after holding out for 161 minutes for his 14.

The end of the innings on 180 left Warwickshire to make 174 off a minimum of 36 overs and they were 3-0 after two overs when the weather had the final say.
