Hampshire take t20 crown

Miller magic almost leads Yorkshire to dramatic comeback win

Hampshire: Friends Life t20 champions for second time in three years

David Miller: Almost led Yorkshire to comeback victory

Hampshire were crowned Friends Life t20 champions after holding on to claim a 10-run win over Yorkshire in a thrilling conclusion to Finals Day.

The Royals looked home and dry when Yorkshire slumped to 47-4 after nine overs of their pursuit of 151, but an inspired innings by David Miller set up a dramatic finale at the Swalec Stadium.

"What a day! The atmosphere was electric in Cardiff and we saw three cracking matches. Yorkshire gave it a right go but it was Hampshire's young guns who came through under pressure at the end."

David Lloyd

Quotes of the week

Miller smashed five sixes on his way to an unbeaten 72 from 36 balls, but he could not manage to get Yorkshire across the line as Chris Wood took three wickets in a nerveless final over.

Hampshire, who also took the 20-over title in 2010, had batted first and set a total of 150-6 from their 20 overs, with Jimmy Adams (43) and James Vince (36) providing most of the impetus in the middle of the innings.

Yorkshire's pursuit began well, captain Andrew Gale leading the way as he and Phil Jaques picked up four boundaries in the first 15 deliveries of the innings.

But Royals skipper Dimitri Mascarenhas, whose four overs went for just 20 runs, bowled Gale for 15 before zeroing in on the middle stump of Joe Root (seven) make it 34-2 in the sixth over.

Economy

Liam Dawson, whose figures of 1-21 were almost as economical as Mascarenhas', then spun one in to bowl Jaques for 11, while semi-final hero Jonny Baristow (three) was caught behind by Michael Bates off the bowling of Danny Briggs.

At the halfway mark the innings had stalled at 49-4 and the required rate had risen to 10 an over, but after Miller was given a reprieve when TV umpire Nick Cook ruled against a catch claimed by Neil McKenzie at short-midwicket, the South African cut loose.

The 23-year-old flayed Sean Ervine for three sixes in four balls in the 12th over, each bigger than the last as he peppered the River Taff.

Gary Balance's departure for seven did not halt Miller's charge as he raced to 50, with Tim Bresnan (18) providing some enthusiastic support at the other end.

A target of 58 from five overs became 36 from three and then 21 from two as Miller's assault continued but Wood stood firm to dismiss Bresnan, Richard Pyrah and Azeem Rafiq in the closing moments and leave Yorkshire on 140-8.

Hampshire produced a steadily-paced innings after winning the toss as Michael Carberry and Adams put on 22 for the first wicket before Ryan Sidebottom broke the stand by removing the former's off stump.

Runs

Hampshire were an even run-a-ball 36-1 at the end of the six-over powerplay and although James Vince was not timing the ball Adams worked hard to locate the gaps, moving the score to 62 at the midpoint.

Adams smashed Pyrah for six over wide long-on but was caught by Ballance looking for a repeat off the very next ball.

After Mckenzie fell for just four, Vince finally got going with two boundaries off Moin Ashraf but the seamer took swift revenge by bowling him for 36.

Sidebottom used all his experience to halt any late charge, conceding just 11 off his last two overs and having the dangerous Ervine caught for 21.

Simon Katich rallied late with 25 from 21 deliveries and the competitive total of 150 proved enough to bring the trophy back to the Ageas Bowl.
