Day 3 of 4
Warwickshire win by an innings and 202 runs

Worcs vs Warwicks

Bears clinch county title

Wright takes final wicket as Pears are crushed at New Road

Keith Barker and Chris Wright: combined to take 17 wickets in the match at New Road

Varun Chopra: Bears opener made 195 to give the Bears a massive first-innings lead

Warwickshire secured the LV= County Championship Division One title in style with an innings victory over Worcestershire with a day to spare.

Chris Wright claimed the final wicket, emphatically bowling last-man Alan Richardson at the start of the afternoon session, as the Pears were dismissed for 209 in their second innings.

Moeen Ali made 72 not out from 117 deliveries but couldn't save the hosts on his own at New Road, with Wright and Keith Barker again doing damage for the Bears.

The new-ball pair, who claimed all 10 wickets as Worcestershire were bowled out for 60 on the opening day, shared seven scalps second time around.

Wright finished with 4-65 to give him match figures of 9-89, while Barker weighed in with 3-39. Fellow seamer Boyd Rankin also claimed a couple of scalps as the home county collapsed after resuming in the morning on 100-2.

Warwickshire's seventh county title, and their first since 2004, has been sealed with a round of matches still to go in the domestic season; it also makes amends for narrowly missing out to Lancashire last summer.

Day Two

Varun Chopra made 195 as Warwickshire tightened their grip on the title on day two of their clash against relegation threatened Worcestershire.

Chopra batted for 409 minutes at New Road as the visitors posted 471 - a lead of 411 on Worcestershire's dreadful first innings total of 60.

An on-going partnership with Jim Troughton (54) eventually yielded 131 before Ian Blackwell (84) and Keith Barker (40) corrected a minor wobble by putting on 80 in 13 overs.

Chopra and Blackwell saw Worcestershire to the crucial fourth batting point with seven balls to spare, a prime requirement if they are to seal the championship this week.

And Troughrton's tea-time declaration at 471-8 should have given them all the time they need to avoid the heartache of last year when they were runners-up to Lancashire after failing to dig out Hampshire on the final day.

Warwickshire soon had their hosts reeling again in their second innings, when Phil Hughes fell at third slip in the second over but some pride was restored as captain Daryl Mitchell (42 not out) saw them to the close at 100-2.

Day One

Warwickshire closed on the County Championship title by dismissing Worcestershire for 60 on the opening day of their penultimate match of the season at New Road.

Seamers Chris Wright (5-24) and Keith Barker (5-36) claimed five wickets apiece as relegation-threatened Worcestershire lasted 28.4 overs after opting to bat first at 10.30am in bowler friendly conditions.

Only three batsmen reached double figures, Brett D'Oliveira's 18 the top score in the county's lowest championship total for 41 years.

Opener Varun Chopra, fresh from his match-winning century in the Clydesdale Bank 40 semi-final, hit 115 not out to lead Warwickshire to 215-2 in reply by stumps, a lead of 155.

Warwickshire came into the game with a 22-point lead over Sussex at the top of Division One and have already added three bonus points to that tally, while bottom side Worcestershire started the match 18 points behind seventh-placed Surrey.

Warwickshire can clinch their first County Championship title since 2004 with a game to spare if they pick up four batting bonus points - achieved by reaching 350 inside 110 overs of their first inings - and go on to win the match.
