Foxes force New Road draw

Rain wipes out more than 120 overs in Division Two clash

Davies: Useful runs in both innings for home side

LV County Championship - Division Two
New Road - Day Four
Worcestershire 300-8 dec (S M Davies 78 no, V S Solanki 65) & 174-4 dec v Leicestershire 193 (Kabir Ali 4-63) & 62-1
Worcestershire (10pts) drew with Leicestershire (6pts)

Worcestershire once again were left frustrated by the weather as they had to settle for a rain-hit draw against Leicestershire.

With more than 120 overs lost in the first three days, it was up to the hosts to make the running when the fourth day got underway.

It took them only 31 minutes to snaffle the last three wickets in Leicestershire's first innings, Kabir Ali picking up two in one over to finish with figures of 4-63.

However, their hopes of picking up quick runs were dashed by some tight seam bowling from the Foxes.

Stephen Moore and Vikram Solanki both departed with only 43 runs on the board but a stand of 60 between Daryl Mitchell (37) and Ben Smith (44) steadied the innings.

Claude Henderson eventually dismissed both batsmen before Moeen Ali, playing due to Graeme Hick's elbow injury, hit an unbeaten 42 from 53 balls.

Steven Davies added an unbeaten 19 to his first-innings effort of 78 not out before Solanki decided to end the innings early at tea.

The Pears, who came within three wickets of beating Warwickshire last week, declared at 174-4 to leave their opponents only 37 overs in the final session to reach a target of 282.

They ended up settling for draw on 62-1, Tom New the only wicket to fall for 16 when he was dismissed by Gareth Andrew.

Day Three

Leicestershire were reduced to 170-7 in their first innings on another rain-shortened day against Worcestershire at New Road.

New-ball pairing Steve Magoffin (3-42) and Kabir Ali (2-46) shared five wickets as the Foxes - for whom Hylton Ackerman's 46 was the only contribution of note - struggled in response to Worcestershire's 300-8 declared.

Australian paceman Magoffin, making his home debut, won an lbw decision to claim the key wicket of Ackerman among his trio of top-order victims.

But with just one day remaining, the prospects of Worcestershire turning their dominance into a positive result appear remote.

Earlier, Pears skipper Vikram Solanki had allowed his side to bat on for eight overs after starting the day at 275-7 in their first innings.

His decision to declare at 300-8 - immediately after collecting the third bonus point - left Steven Davies stranded on 78 not out.

Day Two

Little play was possible at New Road as rain washed out much of the second day of the County Championship match between Worcestershire and Leicestershire.

The match was evenly poised after hosts Worcestershire reached 258-7 on the first day.

However, the two teams were consigned to the pavilion by the adverse weather in Worcester after only 8.1 overs were bowled, in which the Pears added 17 runs without further loss.

New Road was out of bounds for much of last season after numerous floods caused severe damage to the playing surface.

Day One

Half-centuries from captain Vikram Solanki and wicketkeeper Steven Davies helped Worcestershire to 258-7 on the opening day of their LV County Championship clash with Leicestershire at New Road.

However, the Foxes will be the happier of the two sides after stumps on the first day as all-rounder Jim Allenby (3-37) struck late to peg the hosts back from 200-4.

New Road managed to dodge the elements for a refreshing change as 97 overs were played on an eventful day in the West Midlands.

Opening bowler Garnett Kruger struck early, removing openers Daryl Mitchell (23) and Steven Moore (14) after Foxes skipper Paul Nixon had won the toss and elected to field.

Solanki and Ben Smith (49) rebuilt the Worcester innings with a stand of 96 before spinner Claude Henderson (2-36) removed both and Allenby chipped in with three wickets in the final session.
