Worcestershire beat Gloucestershire by 21 runs

Steve Davies hit a blistering century to help Worcestershire to their record 40 over score as they beat Gloucestershire by 21 runs.

The reigning Pro40 League champions showed they would not give away their title lightly as they blitzed the current leaders at New Road.

Davies smashed a scintillating 119 from just 87 balls as he combined with Vikram Solanki to devastating effect once again at the top of the order.

The Royals made 316-5 to better their previous 40-over best of 307-4 from 1975 as they set a challenging target for Gloucester after being put into bat by the visitors.

That decision by Gladiators skipper Alex Gidman looked a poor one to say the least as Solanki and Davies pummelled the visiting bowling attack by slamming 160 from the first 18 overs.

Solanki hit

Solanki made 70 off 49 balls before he was run out as finally Gloucestershire made a breakthrough, but Davies went on and reached his century off just 75 balls with a 19th boundary.

Davies then added 73 in ten overs with Stephen Moore before his brilliant innings ended on 119 when he holed out to Jon Lewis at cover off Steve Kirby.

Moore's 46 from 48 balls as a useful contribution while Ben Smith and Moeen Ali chipped in to make sure the Royals built on their superb start to post an imposing target.

Gloucestershire came out in even finer fashion than the hosts though, with Hamish Marshall and former Worcestershire batsman Kadeer Ali putting on 92 in just nine overs.

The Gladiators always looked like struggling though once Chris Whelan had removed both Kadeer (39) and Marshall (48) in successive overs.

Spinner

Skipper Gidman was trapped lbw for nine and spinner Gareth Batty had both Mark Hardinges and David Brown caught in the deep.

Chris Taylor kept Gloucestershire in it with a sparkling 79 off 61 balls, but even he could not keep them near the run rate and they ended up needing 27 from the final over for victory.

Just six runs came from it as Gloucestershire lost their last wicket off the third ball to close on 295 all out, 21 runs short and a big dent in their hopes of taking Worcestershire's Pro40 League crown.
