Rain ruins final day

Richardson: testing spell on day four

Rain foiled Worcestershire's victory charge on the final day against Gloucestershire, despite the best efforts of Alan Richardson.

LV County Championship - Division Two New Road Gloucestershire 245 (C G Taylor 71) & 243-7 dec (H J H Marshall 50, A Richardson 4-68) v Worcestershire 388 (M M Ali 106, B J M Scott 67, A N Kervezee 57, J Lewis 4-55) Worcestershire (10pts) drew with Gloucestershire (7pts)

Wet weather at New Road meant play did not get under way until 3.45pm, Gloucestershire resuming on 189-5 in their second innings, a lead of just 46 runs.

They advanced to 243-7, Richardson claiming both wickets, before declaring with a lead of 100 to bring an end to proceedings.

Richardson, the 35-year-old seamer who joined Worcestershire from Middlesex during the winter, accounted for James Franklin (23) and Chris Taylor (30) to finish with figures of 4-68.

He also had Vikram Banerjee put down at slip before Banerjee (17no) and Jon Lewis (16no) steered the visitors to safety.

Gloucestershire's day was marred slightly by the deduction of two points for a slow over rate during the match.

Day three

Moeen Ali completed his century as Worcestershire moved into a strong position for victory against Gloucestershire on day three at New Road.

Ali made 106 as the hosts compiled a score of 388 to hold a first innings lead of 143, and that was made to look even better as they reduced Gloucestershire to 189-5 by the close.

Hamish Marshall made a battling 50 but the visitors led by just 46 runs at the close, and with just five wickets left in hand.

Jon Lewis had earlier taken 4-55 to help finally end Worcestershire's innings, but he may also be needed to pull out something special with the bat to try and avoid defeat.

Day two

Half-centuries from Moeen Ali and Alexei Kervezee saw Worcestershire strike back against Gloucestershire on day two of the LV= County Championship Division Two match at New Road.

Chris Taylor hit 71 for Gloucestershire to help the lift the visitors to 245 all out off 77.4 overs, before the double act of Moeen and Kervezee took centre-stage as the hosts replied with 229 for six before stumps.

Hard-hitting Kervezee made 57 off 58 balls, including two sixes and eight fours, before falling leg before wicket to Jon Lewis, while Moeen was undefeated with 70 - including 11 fours off 85 deliveries.

The pair put on 107 runs in 19 overs for the fourth wicket, after Taylor had registered his highest Championship score so far this season thanks to a six and eight fours off 104 balls.

Day one

There was more play than at some venues at New Road with Gloucestershire reaching 78-3 in the 29.1 overs possible on the first day at Worcestershire.

23-year-old Worcestershire paceman Richard Jones made the most of conditions to take 2-18 for the hosts as they had the better of the first exchanges of the Division Two encounter.

Prolonged heavy rain, followed by mopping-up operations, prevented play from getting under way until 3.15pm after Gloucestershire had won the toss.

The lively Jones struck the first blow when he tempted Steve Snell (six) into driving a full-length delivery to Daryl Mitchell at second slip, and he added to his tally shortly afterwards by having Chris Dent caught at fine leg by Matt Mason for five.

Jonathan Batty made 38 before he nudged an Alan Richardson ball to Alexei Kervezee at short leg, before further rain brought the day to an abrupt end.
