Worcestershire 176 (B F Smith 60) & 279 (B F Smith 71, D K H Mitchell 70) v Essex 116 (S P Jones 4-14) & 264 (R S Bopara 85, S P Jones 4-41, Kabir Ali 4-64) Worcestershire (17pts) beat Essex (3pts) by 75 runs

A 75-run triumph over Essex gave Worcestershire their first LV County Championship win of the season at New Road on Sunday.

Ravi Bopara, with a fine 85 was unable to, stop his side slipping to defeat after the home side had set a challenging target of 340 for victory.

Bopara put on 111 for the sixth wicket with James Foster but the visitors were eventually all out for 264, with Simon Jones and Kabir Ali taking 4-41 and 4-64 respectively.

Former England paceman Kabir reduced the visitors to 38-3, claiming the scalps of Jason Gallian, Tom Westley and Varun Chopra within the first nine overs.

Bopara and Mark Pettini began to steady the boat but Australian paceman Steve Magoffin was rewarded for his efforts when he had Bopara trapped lbw after 12 fours from 126 balls.

Alex Tudor, Tony Palladino and Danish Kaneria all fell to Jones to complete a successful day for Worcestershire and end a frustrating run of four weather-affected Division Two draws in a row.

Day Two

Simon Jones helped Worcestershire edge ahead in their LV County Championship match with Division Two rivals Essex at New Road.

The former England fast bowler delivered only two balls on the second morning and took a wicket with each one as Essex folded for 116 to give the home side a first-innings advantage of 60.

Jones made the most of seamer-friendly conditions for an eventual return of 4-14 in three spells amounting to only 26 balls.

Having bowled four overs in Essex's slump to 80 for seven, he was not needed when Steve Magoffin removed James Foster with a catch behind the wicket.

Jones then came back into the attack to polish off the tailenders David Masters and Danish Kaneria.

The home side then batted again, with Essex leg-spinner Kaneria breaking the first half-century stand of the match when Stephen Moore (28) once more fell lbw.

Meanwhile, medium-pacer Ravi Bopara found some sharp movement to have Vikram Solanki (15) caught behind.

However, opener Daryl Mitchell made careful progress - hitting only six fours from 171 balls - until he was bowled by Kaneria for 70, while a relatively subdued Graeme Hick departed for 16 with a mistimed pull off Bopara.

Having earlier been dropped by Varun Chopra at second slip, Ben Smith added 71 from 156 balls before he fell lbw to Alex Tudor.

Day One

Kabir Ali led a battling Worcestershire fightback as 17 wickets fell on day one of their Division Two clash with Essex.

The former England paceman grabbed 3-21 to help reduce the visitors to 80-7 from 21 overs in reply to his side's 176.

Worcestershire, who won the toss, were skittled out in just 70 overs.

Danish Kaneria (3-20), Tony Palladino (3-45) and Alex Tudor (3-46) did the damage, with Ryan ten Doeschate removing top scorer Ben Smith for 60, his first Championship half century of the season.

Essex, however, found batting even more difficult on a hectic wicket-tumbling opening day in which seven batsmen fell victim to lbw decisions.

The visitors lost half their side for a meagre 39 inside 12 overs.

Former England pacemen Simon Jones and Steve Magoffin weighed in with the other wickets to fall on a madcap opening day at New Road.
