Dogged Worcestershire display denies Australia pre-Ashes victory at New Road

Australia had to settle for a draw at New Road

Tom Fell: Hit a maiden first-class half-century to deny Australia

Australia were unable to secure a morale-boosting pre-Ashes win as a docile pitch and some dogged batting ensured Worcestershire claimed a battling draw at New Road.

Needing nine wickets to force victory on the final day, Australia managed only four as the hosts reached 274-5 before the captains shook hands on a draw at 5pm.

However, with plenty of runs in the bank for the Australian batsmen and a good look at likely back-up seamers Jackson Bird and Ryan Harris, the fixture largely served its purpose ahead of next week's first Test.

In the end, defiant half-centuries from home skipper Daryl Mitchell (54) and 19-year-old batsman Tom Fell (62no) put the brakes on the tourists - the duo occupying 277 between them - as only all-rounder James Faulkner (2-21) really pushed his case with the ball.

The left-armer claimed the wickets of Matt Pardoe (57) and Moeen Ali (35) before lunch; the former pouched by Clarke and the latter trapped leg before.

Harris took the only wicket to fall in a moribund afternoon session, Alexei Kervezee dragging the ball onto middle stump, but Mitchell prevented further inroads before tea.

The evening session brought the end of the captain, whose concentration finally snapped when he top-edged Harris to mid-on where Faulkner took the catch.

But Fell assured there would be no late collapse, with Ben Cox adding an unbeaten 25 before the draw was settled at the earliest opportunity.
