W Indies vs New Zealand
Thank you for joining us for this game. The next game will be in Sabina Park again, tomorrow. NZ will try to improve in all departments, whereas WI will try to keep their winning form.
Man of the Match - Andre Russell
Andre Russell gets the Man of the Match award for his 4 wickets for 45 runs. The early breakthroughs really set up this win for the West Indies. It is refreshing to see a bowler getting the Man of the Match. Williamson honest in his post match speech, saying improvements in batting and bowling are needed and there is a lot of work to be done. The winning captain, Darren Sammy, is happy to keep winning and putting up a professional display. He wishes to do it again in the next ODI.
West Indies win by 9 wickets
A good win for the West Indies, they were the better side today. NZ lost wickets at regular intervals and could not get to a decent score. Watling starring with the bat, but NZ still a few runs short. West Indies being helped to a 9-wicket victory by Gayle and Smith who scored 63 and 65 respectively. Rain shortened the match to 33 overs, but that did not affect it too much. NZ need to re-think their batting and also need to work on injured players, West Indies need to keep going the way they are and keep entertaining home crowds.
Over 25 Guptill 0-2
136-1 - A completely random change, Guptill with the ball. Smith drives the second ball of the over and gets the winning runs. West Indies win this first ODI, even after the rain stoppage.
Over 24 Oram 0-1-4-1-1-1
134-1 - Only 9 needed for WI to win this game from 10 overs. Smith clips it for four on the leg side as Oram slides one outside leg stump, bad ball, got what it deserved. 8 runs from it, only need 2 more to win.
Over 23 Southee 2-1-4-1-1-1
126-1 - Rob Nicol covered a lot of ground running backwards but dropped Smith. Not a difficult chance, chances like these should be taken. Tried to take it with fingers pointing up then down, made a mess of things in the end. Gayle cuts and cuts well, a safe boundary and a good shot square of the wicket. Another good over for Windies 10 runs from it. West Indies on their way.
Over 22 Oram 2-1wd-1-0-0-0-1
116-1 - Batting power play of just 3 overs has been called. It is shortened because of the rain, bringing Oram into the attack. Low full toss worked away into the off side for a couple by Gayle. Gayle is looking intent to hit balls out of the park, but just not getting hold of it. A good over from Oram, WI need 20 to win from 66 balls.
Over 21 Southee 1-0-0-0-1-0
111-1 - A tidy over from Southee just 2 from it. Keeping a tight line and length to Gayle, not letting him pull or cut easily. The score is one-one-one for one. Will Nelson affect the game?
Over 20 Nethula 1-4-0-0-6-1
109-1 - Nethula to continue. Smith drives Nethula through long off for a boundary. The outfield is wet so the fielders will run gingerly. The ball is not wet and is difficult to grip for the spinner. Smith hits it out of the ground for a six. He brings up his fifty with a cracking shot over long off. 12 runs from that over, Windies in a hurry.
Over 19 Southee 0-0-1-1-1-1
97-1 - Southee to continue after the rains. Gayle and Smith will have to restart their innings carefully and build on their current score. NZ have had time to re-group and will want to apply pressure. Gayle plays it to fine leg and gets his 50 straight away. A good knock and the local hero is cheered by the crowd. Two dots and four singles from the over.
We are back
And after that rain stoppage, we are back. Play has resumed with Gayle on 49, Smith on 38 and New Zealand looking for wickets. Will Gayle and co. want to end this early, or will NZ make in roads into the WI batting line up after the stoppage. The new target for the West Indies is 136 runs to win from 33 overs.
There is good news! Play will start in the next 15 minutes. The game has been shortened so West Indies will now need another 43 runs from 15 overs to win this match.
Good news! Covers are coming off. There will be a pitch inspection soon. The D/L method par score is 50 for 1 after 20 overs, so if West Indies can get to the 20 over mark, they should win this game even if rain interrupts again. (D/L par score for 2 wickets is 61 and for 3 is 74).
West Indies only need 2 more overs to get a result out of this match. It is still raining, but hopefully there will be some play soon.
Andrew Ellis has picked up an injury (a grade-one strain on his left squad muscle) and won't take any further part in this match. Nathan McCullum is on for him as a sub. This weakens the NZ bowling. West Indies need to have batted for 20 overs for D/L to apply, they have only batted 18 overs.
The covers are coming on and the players are coming off. There is no visible rain and the crowd is not happy about the stoppage. Lightning flashes and bad weather on the way! May just be a precaution from the ground staff.
Over 18 Nethula 0-0-4-1-0-0
93-1 - Nethula to continue after the drinks break. Drags one down the leg side and Smith sweeps it past long leg for a boundary. Nice controlled shot from Smith. Nethula will be under pressure, bowling against Gayle and not having a big score to defend. Good over, Gayle still on 49.
WI are looking good in their chase, but there is a chance of rain with dark clouds gathering. NZ will look to get some wickets to pull WI back, but Gayle and Smith look like they have other plans.
Dark clouds building in the background, let's hope that Gayle-storm can finish the game before natural storms. The ground staff ready, just as a precaution.
Over 17 Southee 1-1-0-0-0-1
88-1 - Southee is brought back to try and contain the run flow, but he was expensive to begin with. A good over for Southee, just the three from it. Drinks break called. Shouldn't they just keep playing and try to avoid rain?
