W Indies vs England
New era, familiar story
Some old failings from England means the much-heralded fresh start begins with a botched run chase in Antigua. They were well in control while openers Lumb and Moeen put on 96 inside 20 overs. But regular wickets, combined with a rising required-rate, proved too much for what - on paper at least - looked a deep batting line-up. Spinner Narine's variations left the middle order flummoxed and West Indies' battery of medium pacers closed out the win with something to spare in the end. Lumb's 106 was only the second time an England batsman has scored a century on ODI debut but was totally overshadowed by the subsequent collapse. West Indies recovered from 45-4 earlier in the day to get up to 269-6, mainly thanks to some late hitting from Dwayne Bravo (87no) and Sammy (61). England trod the opposite path, hitting only one boundary in the final eight overs, which began with them needing 65 runs.
Over 50 - England 254/6 (Bopara 23, Bresnan 14)
Rampaul finishes off the job for West Indies without alarm, conceding only six runs as Bopara and Bresnan again fail to make much in the way of solid contact. West Indies win by 15 runs.
Over 49 - England 248/6 (Bopara 18, Bresnan 14)
Bresnan misses out on a full toss, swatting it into the leg-side for a single. Bopara crunches a drive towards long-on where a smart piece of fielding by Simmons keeps it to two. Bopara follows up with a single along the ground to the same fielder and Bresnan does likewise. Dwayne Bravo doing a good job of getting his yorkers on target. Bopara bunts a full toss back over the bowler's head for two from the final ball of an over costing seven runs. England need 22 off six balls.
Over 48 - England 241/6 (Bopara 13, Bresnan 11)
Rampaul is back into the attack, he can bowl the last two from this end. Again there is a lot of huffing and puffing from England's batsmen but they fail to find the middle of the bat and, even accounting for a couple of wides, only collect eight runs from the over. Bresnan keeps the strike with a pulled single. England need 29 from 12 balls.
Over 47 - England 233/6 (Bopara 9, Bresnan 10)
Bresnan swings hard but to no great effect, including one swipe at fresh-air. Bopara at least turns one into two and then keeps the strike with a single but Dwayne Bravo's over costs only five runs in total. England need 37 off 18 balls.
Over 46 - England 228/6 (Bopara 5, Bresnan 9)
Bresnan twice plays and misses after failing to read Narine's doosra but ends the over with a boundary to fine-leg. Narine finishes his 10 overs with figures of 2-36. Now is time for some big shots with England needing 42 from 24 balls.
Over 45 - England 220/6 (Bopara 4, Bresnan 4)
England deal in singles - plus a wide - during Dwayne Bravo's latest over. Seven from it reduce the equation to 45 needed from 30 balls. Bravo's got two overs left to bowl, Narine is about to bowl his last...
Over 44 - England 213/6 (Bopara 1, Bresnan 1)
Narine concedes just two singles in the penultimate over of his spell. There are a couple of anxious prods but at least Bopara and Bresnan are now off the mark. England need 57 off 36 balls.
Over 43 - England 211/6 (Bopara 0, Bresnan 0)
Bresnan joins Bopara, also yet to get off the mark, in the middle for the final eight overs with England needing 59 runs.
Buttler c Holder b Dwayne Bravo 13
England are crumbling under pressure, Buttler the latest to go, chipping a simple catch to Holder in the covers after Dwayne Bravo rolled his fingers over a slower ball.
Over 42 - England 205/5 (Buttler 7, Bopara 0)
Narine is really turning it now and England's batsmen aren't sure which ones will and which won't. Bopara, stretching forward in defence, is beaten outside off-stump by one that doesn't.
Root c Ramdin b Narine 37
This is getting interesting now as Root departs, gloving a sweep to wicketkeeper Ramdin. England need 65 off 49 balls, Bopara is making his way to the middle to join Buttler.
Over 41 - England 200/4 (Root 37, Buttler 2)
Buttler pushes a single down the ground to get off the mark from his sixth ball faced. Rampaul drifts onto leg-stump and is clipped away for four by Root, although a sliding Smith on the square-leg boundary should have cut it off. England require 70 off 54 balls.
Over 40 - England 192/4 (Root 31, Buttler 0)
Buttler is the new batsman with the chance to enhance his reputation as England's one-day 'finisher'. Shaky start for Buttler, playing and missing outside off-stump and then padding up to one that turned back from Narine, who was interested in the lbw shout (but it was clearly missing leg-stump).
Stokes b Narine 5
Stokes is bowled behind his legs aiming a sweep. He hangs around while the umpires check it didn't bounce back onto his leg-stump from wicketkeeper Ramdin's glove. It didn't and he's soon on the way.
Over 39 - England 192/3 (Root 31, Stokes 5)
Root hits the first ball of Rampaul's over one-bounce to the midwicket boundary. That is the precursor to nine runs being taken from the over but England's required-rate has crept above seven-an-over (7.09).
Over 38 - England 183/3 (Root 26, Stokes 2)
Stokes batted at No 3 during the latter part of the one-day series in Australia but he's moved down two places today. The Durham all-rounder slog sweeps in front of square for two to get off the mark.
Over 37 - England 180/3 (Root 23, Stokes 0)
Stokes, who didn't get a bowl earlier, is the new batsman with England requiring 90 from 78 balls. Narine is coming back on...
Lumb c Dwayne Bravo b Rampaul 106
Lumb steps away to leg to make some room but his cut goes in the air and Dwayne Bravo is able to take the catch above his head at backward point. Rampaul gets the breakthrough in his first over back. Lumb faced 117 balls, including seven fours and two sixes.
