Warwicks vs Somerset

Friends Life t20: Craig Kieswetter sends Somerset through to quarter-finals; Warwickshire miss out

Craig Kieswetter: Top scored in the match with 76 from 53 balls

Darren Maddy: Bowed out from Twenty20 cricket in defeat

Somerset have reached the quarter-finals of the Friends Life t20 after prevailing by 10 runs in their winner-takes-all Midlands Group showdown with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

The men from the West Country maintained their fine record in the shortest format, reaching the knockout phase for a fifth successive year with a narrow win over Warwickshire, who miss out as a result.

Craig Kieswetter's typically belligerent 76 from 53 balls put Somerset on their way to a competitive 175-5 and, despite a record fourth-wicket partnership between Darren Maddy (67no) and Laurie Evans (51no), the Bears fell narrowly short.

Kieswetter became the first player to pass 400 runs in this year's competition, sharing useful partnerships with Peter Trego and Nick Compton (both 32 from 23) after the visitors had been asked to bat first.

Boyd Rankin was the pick of the Warwickshire bowlers, dismissing Kieswetter and James Hildreth in successive balls, although Varun Chopra's decision to give the England hopeful just three overs proved costly.

Chopra was the first wicket to fall in the Warwickshire reply, however Will Porterfield and the evergreen Maddy added a half-century stand for the second wicket to reignite home hopes.

The match swung drastically in Somerset's favour when Craig Meschede removed Porterfield and his replacement Rikki Clarke in the ninth over, however Maddy and Evans set up a dramatic finale with a stunning counter-attack.

Maddy, who is retiring from professional cricket at the end of this season, rolled back the years with two sixes and six fours and the Bears would have fancied their chances with 22 runs required from the final two overs.

Evans joined his partner past 50 however death bowling specialists Alfonso Thomas and Yasir Arafat produced an exhibition in Yorker bowling when it mattered to keep Somerset alive.
