Warwicks vs Durham

Washout saves Bears

Durham left frustrated as rain prevents any play on the final day

Weather woe: Edgbaston

A final-day washout at Edgbaston spared Warwickshire from an almost-certain defeat against Durham.

LV County Championship - Division One Edgbaston Durham 379 (P Mustard 100, M D Stoneman 77, G J Muchall 60, Imran Tahir 8-114) v Warwickshire 100 & 229-4 (I J Westwood 86 no, R Clarke 66) Warwickshire (6pts) drew with Durham (10pts)

Umpires Peter Willey and Rob Bailey initially planned a restart at 3.45pm, which would have given the visitors 36 overs in which to take the six wickets they required for victory.

But Warwickshire remained on their overnight score of 229-4, after being asked to follow-on 279 behind the previous day, when further downpours resulted in the match being called off at 4.30pm.

Bears skipper Ian Westwood, therefore, remained 14 runs short of his century while debutant wicketkeeper Richard Johnson was on 20.

Defending champions Durham took 10 points from the draw to remain fifth in the Division One table, while six points for Warwickshire moved them out of bottom spot, above Hampshire.

Day three

Warwickshire slumped to their lowest total in 11 years as they were forced to follow on by Durham after being bowled out for 100 at Edgbaston, but made a much better fist of things second time around.

Mitchell Claydon and Liam Plunkett both recorded excellent figures of 3-17 and 3-16 respectively as the Bears only just made three figures in replying to the champions' 379.

Leg spinner Scott Borthwick then took two wickets in his first seven balls as Warwickshire slipped to 62-3 in their second attempt, but a century partnership by Ian Westwood (86 not out) and Rikki Clarke (66) restored some pride.

The fourth-wicket stand of 114 helped to trim the deficit to 50 as they reached 229-4 by the close, although Durham are still favourites to chalk up a third win in defence of last season's title.

Day two

Phil Mustard made exactly 100 as Durham made 379 in their first innings against Warwickshire, despite Imran Tahir taking eight wickets for the hosts.

Mark Stoneman and Gordon Muchall started the day well for the visitors as they took their second wicket partnership to 153, before the latter was removed by Tahir for 60.

Stoneman followed soon after for 77 and when Ian Blackwell went for a duck Durham had lost three wickets for 15 runs, and as wickets tumbled Tahir soon had them reduced to 235-7.

Mustard set about stabilising an innings that had lost six wickets for 78 runs, with the wicketkeeper putting on 95 with Liam Plunkett (41) and eventually making 100 when he was the last man to fall.

The Bears lost opener Darren Maddy for nought in response, as they got off to a shaky start by making 18-1 in seven overs before the close.

Day one

Recalled duo Mark Stoneman and Gordon Muchall helped Durham reach 65 for one on a weather-hit opening day against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Just 21 overs were possible after a five-hour wait for play to get under way in the basement battle in Division One of the LV County Championship.

Further showers and bad light caused three more stoppages before the gloomy weather closed in again at 6pm to end proceedings.

Having won the toss and opted to bat first, Durham, without Steve Harmison due to an ankle problem, got off to the worst possible start when they lost Michael Di Venuto for four in Chris Woakes' opening over of the day.

However Stoneman and Muchall, who had both been drafted into the side following the champions' two-day defeat by Kent, stood firm.

After scoring a career-best 118 against Durham MCCU in his only previous first-class innings this season, Stoneman - preferred to Kyle Coetzer at the top of the order - played some pleasing shots to reach 31 not out.

Muchall, in contrast, overcame a difficult start, including being dropped at second slip in Woakes' second over, to end up unbeaten on 21.
