Big Bash League: Melbourne Renegades beat Sydney Thunder by five wickets

Muttiah Muralitharan celebrates a wicket for Melbourne

The Melbourne Renegades beat the Sydney Thunder by five wickets to go to the top of the table in the Big Bash League in Australia after two wins out of two.

Aaron Finch's Renegades got on top early with their spin trio of Muttiah Muralitharan, Aaron O'Brien and Marlon Samuels taking six wickets and helping restrict the Thunder to 116-7 from their 20 overs.

It could have been even worse for the hosts at the ANZ Staduim had it not been for Chris Tremain's enterprising late knock when he made 37 not out from just 23 balls to make sure his side at least made it into three figures.

Skipper Finch then led his side's canter towards their modest victory target, as he scored 31 of their 117-5 to get them home with ten balls left in hand.

Chris Gayle's run out for 12 was the bad start Sydney did not need as they batted first, and it got even worse when Usman Khawaja was trapped lbw by Murali for 19, as that triggered a huge collapse.

From 41-1, that wicket was one of six to fall for the addition of just 19 runs to leave them teetering on 60-7 and in danger of being totally blown away.

Tremain and Ryan Carters helped to salvage some form of respectability though with their partnership of 56 lifting them into three figures and at least giving them something to bowl at.

Carters hit 18 off 19 balls but was mainly getting Tremain on strike as he hit some lusty blows, including three sixes, in his 37 not out.

Azhar Mahmood removed opener Daniel Harris for just eight to give the Renegades a sniff, but Finch's solid 31 kept Melbourne moving in the right direction.

Ben Rohrer added a spritely 27 before Peter Nevill (nine not out) and William Sheridan (12 not out) steered them safely to an easy victory.
