Sydney Sixers win by 7 runs

Sydney Sixers vs Hurricanes

Big Bash League: Sydney Sixers hold off Hobart Hurricanes in nail-biter at the SCG

Steve Smith: A captain's knock for Sydney Sixers

Sydney Sixers produced an inspired fightback with the ball to overcome Hobart Hurricanes by seven runs in their Big Bash encounter at the SCG.

Chasing 180 for victory, Hobart appeared to be cruising towards their target when openers Tim Paine (57) and Ben Dunk (39) added 98 for the first wicket inside 10 overs.

However, after both batsmen perished to Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon (2-28), the Hurricanes folded to 172-8, allowing Sydney to register their fourth win in six matches.

The Sixers had earlier posted 179-6, thanks in the main to another Australia Test star, Steve Smith, who top-scored with 52 from 32 balls on his return to the side.

Smith came to the middle with his side in good shape after Nottinghamshire left-hander Michael Lumb had blasted 23 off just 13 deliveries at the top of the order.

The Australia all-rounder hit two sixes and three fours during his half-century, while Jordan Silk (32no) provided a useful cameo down the order.

The Hurricanes stormed out of the traps in reply thanks to the invention of Paine and power of Dunk but the former will be ruing his decision to reverse-sweep Lyon in the 10th over, dragging his feet out of the crease in the process, and allowing Dan Smith to stump him.

Dunk was also dismissed leaving his ground, Lyon luring him down the pitch with a flighted delivery and wicketkeeper Smith removing the bails.

At 109-2 Hobart were still above the required run-rate and a quickfire 33 from Travis Birt edged them closer to victory.

But, with the pressure beginning to tell as the finishing line drew closer, Birt and Evan Gulbis fell to Josh Hazlewood in the penultimate over, leaving 14 required off Brett Lee's last, a feat which proved too steep for the tail.
