Sussex vs Yorks

County Championship: Yorkshire title hopes slipping away

Chris Nash: Scored 167 not out off very generous bowling

Yorkshire's hopes of winning the LV= County Championship were dealt a blow as their clash with Sussex at Hove ended in a rain-affected draw.

After the visitors had sent down 30 overs of declaration bowling to set up a run chase, their pursuit of a target of 300 was ended after 20 overs following a torrential downpour.

Yorkshire had reached 81-2 in response to Sussex's second-innings total of 333-3 when the players shook hands and their failure to force a result, combine with Durham's win over Derbyshire, has left them 27.5 points behind with two games to play.

Yorkshire would have to beat both Middlesex and Surrey convincingly and hope that Durham slip up, but it looks an unlikely prospect.

The away side sent in Liam Plunkett to try and give their chase a rousing start but he was well held by Sussex skipper Ed Joyce at mid-wicket in the eighth over for 11.

And their hopes suffered another blow when Phil Jacques (23) was trapped in front by left-arm spinner Ashar Zaidi to give the Sussex debutant a fifth wicket in the match.

Rain

Adam Lyth (40 not out) and Kane Williamson (5no) added 42 in 10 overs before the second cloudburst of the innings ended Yorkshire's challenge.

Earlier, Chris Nash and Rory Hamilton-Brown had both scored facile hundreds in a fourth-wicket stand of 260 in 30 overs as Yorkshire employed part-time bowlers to set up the declaration.

Joyce was the only wicket to fall before Sussex declared, the batsman picking out long on for 14 having completed 1,000 Championship runs for the season before giving Jacques his maiden first-class wicket in his 186th match.

Nash's hundred was his second of the season although he celebrated sheepishly as Yorkshire employed Andrew Gale, Jacques, Gary Ballance and Lyth to feed cheap runs.

Hamilton-Brown's first hundred since his return to Sussex last winter followed and he finished on 126 from 83 balls with 17 fours and three sixes.

Nash made an unbeaten 167, only five runs short of a new career-best, from 137 deliveries with 26 boundaries and three sixes.
