Friends Life t20: Middlesex see off Sussex to take over at the summit of South Group

Joe Denly and Dawid Malan: Both made crucial contributions for Middlesex

Middlesex moved to the top of the highly-competitive South Group in the Friends Life t20 with a six-wicket win over struggling Sussex.

Joe Denly made 53 and Dawid Malan - the leading run-scorer in this season's competition - weighed in with a run-a-ball 41 as the Panthers overhauled the Sharks' total of 148-7 with two balls to spare at Hove.

Skipper Chris Nash top-scored for the hosts with an unbeaten 61 batting at number four in the order, including putting on a fourth-wicket stand of 45 with Scott Styris (24).

Sussex had got off to the worst possible start when Dwayne Smith fell to the opening ball of the match, caught behind by wicketkeeper Adam Rossington as he attempted to hit Kyle Mills through the leg side.

Breezy contributions

Rory Hamilton-Brown (18) and Matt Machan (27) both made breezy contributions but it was left to Nash - who hit five fours and three sixes - to underpin the innings.

However, Middlesex's slow bowlers did well to keep the Sharks under control and Gareth Berg finished things off impressively, taking two wickets with the final two balls to finish with figures of 3-19 from three overs.

Opener Paul Stirling then quickly put the Panthers on the front foot in their run chase, hitting 26 from just seven deliveries.

After the first ball went for four leg byes the Ireland international took 22 runs from the rest of Lewis Hatchett's opening over, hitting four boundaries and also clearing the rope once with a sweetly-timed blow over mid-wicket.

Although he was bowled when charging down the pitch to Adam Miller soon after, his early onslaught made the equation much easier for Malan and new-man Denly.

The pair put on exactly 80 for the second wicket and even with their departures, along with the late dismissal of Rossington, leading to a late wobble, Adam Voges saw Middlesex over the line with an unbeaten 14.
