NatWest Pro40 - Division One
Sussex Sharks 277-6 (M W Goodwin 77, D R Smith 54) v Durham Dynamos 84 (R J Kirtley 5-26)
Sussex beat Durham by 193 runs
Defending champions Sussex Sharks moved top of the NatWest Pro40 League with a 193-run victory over Durham Dynamos on Friday.
Chasing 278 for victory under the Hove floodlights, the Dynamos were reduced to 44-5 by a superb spell from James Kirtley.
Former England paceman Kirtley claimed 5-26 from six overs, including Ian Blackwell with the first ball of the innings, as Durham's batting line-up capitulated in spectacular fashion.
Ben Harmison and Kyle Coetzer, both with 22, were the joint top-scorers in the visitors' miserable effort of 84 all out in 24.1 overs.
Earlier, Sussex had been given the perfect start by a stand of 75 in 13 overs between openers Ed Joyce and Rory Hamilton-Brown which ended when Hamilton-Brown drove Will Gidman to short midwicket for 39.
Joe Gatting (10), making his competition debut for the Sharks, followed in Gidman's next over when he was lbw having struck Gidman (2-23) for a straight six two balls earlier, but Murray Goodwin continued his impressive form with 77 from just 68 balls as Sussex scored at nearly seven runs an over.
Goodwin added 57 for the third wicket with Joyce, who was smartly stumped by Phil Mustard one short of his half-century, and skipper Mike Yardy (9) sacrificed his wicket after a mix-up with Goodwin in which either batsman could have been run out.
Goodwin recovered his composure to put on 82 in just nine overs with the big-hitting Dwayne Smith, before holing out to long off after hitting seven fours and a six.
Smith's explosive cameo of 54 from just 30 balls, which included four sixes and three fours, ended when he was caught trying to dispatch Blackwell's left-arm spin over long-on.
