Sussex back on top

Derbyshire suffer Horsham horror show

Panesar: seven wickets in the match

Sussex thrashed Derbyshire by an innings and 109 runs at Horsham to move back to the top of Division Two of the LV County Championship.

LV County Championship - Division Two Horsham Derbyshire 242 (W J Durston 69) & 225 (M S Panesar 4-67, C D Collymore 4-50) v Sussex 576-3 dec (E C Joyce 164, C D Nash 156, B C Brown 112, M W Goodwin 100 no) Sussex (24pts) beat Derbyshire (1pts) by an innings and 109 runs

Seam bowler Corey Collymore claimed 4-50 and left-arm spinner Monty Panesar picked up 4-67 as Derbyshire were all out for 225 in their second innings shortly before tea.

The visitors resumed on the third morning at 27-2, requiring another 307 just to make Sussex - who had piled up 576-3 declared in their first innings, including centuries for all of the top four - bat again.

But that never looked likely as only skipper Greg Smith, with 49, resisted for long.

Smith, in his first match since taking over the Derbyshire captaincy from Chris Rogers, was one of Panesar's victims, trapped lbw.

Panesar ran through the lower order before Yasir Arafat bowled last man Mark Footitt to seal Sussex's seventh victory of the season.

They are now 20 points above Glamorgan, while Derbyshire remain rock bottom and without a win since April.

Day two

Chris Nash, Ed Joyce, Ben Brown and Murray Goodwin all hit hundreds on Thursday as promotion-chasing Sussex turned the screw on Derbyshire in their match at Horsham.

The hosts mercilessly piled up 576 for three declared as all their top four batsmen reached three figures - a first in the club's history for a first-class match.

Nash and Joyce added 294 for the first wicket, a Sussex record for the Cricketfield Road ground, before the inexperienced Brown and veteran Goodwin added 145 for the third wicket.

Resuming on 81, Nash moved quickly on to 156 before mis-hitting a wide ball from Robin Peterson to cover while Joyce added 127 with Brown, making 164 himself before falling to Greg Smith.

Brown, in just his seventh first-class match, reached a maiden ton from 117 balls before slicing to cover while Goodwin, with four sixes and 12 fours, raced to his 63rd first-class hundred off only 83 balls.

By the close, Derbyshire were 27 for two in their second innings, still 307 runs adrift, as both Paul Borrington and Chesney Hughes fell during a skilful new ball spell from Corey Collymore.

Day one

Sussex gave their promotion hopes a boost when they dismissed Derbyshire for 242 on the opening day of their County Championship match in Horsham.

The hosts had their opponents, who had won the toss and elected to bat first, reeling on the ropes at 96 for six, with Corey Collymore, Luke Wright and Monty Panesar each claiming two wickets.

Wes Durston held firm, however, and he and wicketkeeper Steve Adshead launched a counter-attack after lunch as they put on 102 runs in 21 overs.

Yasir Arafat provided some reverse swing with the old ball to stem the flow of runs, though, as first Durston (69) was yorked before Adshead played across a straight one in sight of his half-century.

Steffan Jones made a belligerent 39 but conditions were put into perspective by Sussex openers Chris Nash (81 not out) and Ed Joyce (69 not out) in the final session.

They compiled Sussex's first century stand for the first wicket since the final game of last season as Derbyshire's six-man attack struggled to create opportunities.
