Surrey vs Sussex

Yardy ton saves Sussex

Surrey hopes dashed by opposition skipper on final day

Yardy: match-saving century

Michael Yardy's hundred ensured Sussex batted out for a draw on the final day against Surrey at Guildford.

LV County Championship - Division Two Guildford Sussex 217 (C T Tremlett 4-32) & 275-6 dec (M H Yardy 100 no, B C Brown 52, S C Meaker 4-86) v Surrey 292 (S M Davies 62, Yasir Arafat 5-81) Surrey (8pts) drew with Sussex (7pts)

The England one-day all-rounder reached 100 not out, his first LV County Championship century of the season, before declaring Sussex's second innings at 275-6 - a lead of 200 - to bring an end to the contest.

Sussex had resumed on 39-2, still 36 behind, and immediately lost Michael Thornely for a duck to the first ball of the day, caught by Mark Ramprakash off Chris Tremlett's bowling.

Ed Joyce (40) and Murray Goodwin (23) also departed before lunch to leave the visitors in trouble on 94-5.

But Yardy, who hit 13 fours and two sixes during a 157-ball contribution, added 108 with Ben Brown (52) for the sixth wicket to stave off the prospect of defeat.

Sussex, however, took just seven points from the stalemate and have lost top spot in the Division Two table to Glamorgan, who beat Worcestershire.

Day three

Stuart Meaker claimed two late wickets to boost Surrey's hopes of a victory against Division Two leaders Sussex.

The hosts led by 75 runs after being dismissed for 292 at Guilford and reduced to Sussex to 39-2 after Meaker's quick-fire double-strike at the end of day three.

The seamer trapped opener Chris Nash leg before for 22 in his second over before also claiming nightwatchman Monty Panesar lbw for a duck three balls later.

Overseas bowler Yasir Arafat had earlier taken 5-81, his best county figures in more than four years, as Sussex made inroads before lunch after the second-day washout.

Arafat dismissed key batsman Ramprakash (21) and skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown (22) before returning later in the day to mop up the Surrey tail.

Steven Davies (62) and Stewart Walters (45) had provided the main resistance in the meantime with a fifth-wicket stand of 89 take their first innings total past that of the visitors.

Chris Tremlett bolstered the score further with some big hitting as he made 28 after smashing Panesar and off-spinner Ollie Rayner for straight sixes.

Day two

Surrey's hopes of putting LV=County Championship Division Two leaders Sussex under pressure were frustrated by the weather at Guildford.

Umpires Steve Garrett and John Steele abandoned the day's play at 4:15pm without a bowl being bowled on day two.

Heavy morning rain had cleared and play had been due to start at 2:10pm after three inspections, but the rain returned just before the players were about to come out.

Surrey will resume tomorrow on 47-0 in reply to Sussex's first innings total of 217.

Day one

Chris Tremlett celebrated his 100th first-class match by taking four wickets as Surrey bowled Sussex out for 217 on the first day at Guildford.

Put in on a green-tinged pitch offering occasional uneven bounce, Sussex slumped to 101-7 before 20-year-old debutant Will Adkin made a determined 45 and added 110 for the last three wickets.

Former England seamer Tremlett was the danger and he caused problems from the very start, as he got rid of Ed Joyce with his second ball on the way to recording the best figures of his short Surrey career of 4-32.

In his second over Tremlett knocked over Michael Thornely's off-stump, and Murray Goodwin followed lbw just two balls later for a third wicket - which he made four by ending Adkin's vigil.

Gareth Batty took two of his three wickets in one over as Surrey took a firm control of the match - as they reached 47 without losing a wicket at the close.
