Surrey vs Somerset

Roy smashes Sabres

Rookie batsman sets up win for Lions

Tremlett: hostile spell

Surrey Lions enhanced their Friends Provident t20 quarter-final prospects with a 38-run victory over Somerset Sabres at the Oval.

Teenage batting sensation Jason Roy hit 74 off 50 balls as the Lions posted a total of 171-6 after choosing to bat first.

Roy, 19, who has yet to play a first-class match but last week became the first Surrey batsman to score a T20 century with 101 against Kent at Beckenham, was well supported by Mark Ramprakash (24) and skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown (25).

The Sabres' run chase never recovered from the loss of four wickets inside the first four overs.

The visitors slumped to 18-4 and, although Kieron Pollard (19) and Jos Buttler (29) briefly restored order, they finished up well short on 133-9.

Surrey paceman Chris Tremlett, who removed Marcus Trescothick (4) and Zander de Bruyn (0) in his second over, finished with figures of 3-17.

The Lions now have 12 points and are level with three other teams - including Somerset - in second place in the South Group standings.
