Day 3 of 4
Middlesex win by 146 runs

Surrey vs Middlesex

LV= County Championship: Middlesex beat Surrey by 146 runs at the Oval

Ollie Rayner: Finished with remarkable figures of 15-118

Ollie Rayner finished with 15 wickets as Middlesex completed a 146-run win over Surrey inside three days at the Kia Oval to stay in mathematical contention for the Division One title.

Rayner took 7-72 to help bowl the hosts out for 238 in their second innings meaning, after his eight-wicket haul in the first, he ended with record match figures for a Middlesex bowler against Surrey of 15-118.

Hashim Amla had threatened to hold up Middlesex or, at the very least, send the contest into a fourth day but, after he had become Rayner's 12th victim, Surrey's hopes of chasing down a victory target of 385 evaporated and they quickly fell to defeat.

At the start of the day Middlesex batted on for an hour and added some quick runs before declaring on 235-9 with Joe Denly, coming in at eight after missing all of day two with a migraine, notching a pleasing 31 off just 21 deliveries.

It was slow left-armer Ravi Patel who claimed the first Surrey wicket shortly after lunch as Arun Harinath was trapped lbw on the back foot for 23, but Rayner then took centre stage once again.

The off-spinner picked up Rory Burns, Vikram Solanki and Zander de Bruyn, but found Amla a more difficult opponent to dislodge as the world's number one batsman dug in on a three-and-a-half vigil.

But once he had fallen for 84 after being caught by skipper Chris Rogers at backward point off the last ball of the 87th over, two more quick wickets fell prompting umpires Jeremy Lloyds and Trevor Jesty to award the extra half-hour.

Fittingly it was Rayner who had the final say as he wrapped up victory when Jade Dernbach was caught by Corey Collymore to give him Middlesex's seventh best figures of all time.
