Ramprakash slays Gladiators

Brown Caps claim crushing home win

Ramprakash: Superb century

Friends Provident Trophy - Group C
The Brit Oval
Surrey 306-6 (M R Ramprakash 121, M N W Spriegel 64) v Gloucestershire 142
Surrey beat Gloucestershire by 164 runs

Mark Ramprakash recorded his 16th one-day hundred in Surrey's 164-run FP Trophy triumph against Group C leaders Gloucestershire on Wednesday.

Previously unbeaten in the competition, and looking back to their best in terms of one-day cricket, the Gladiators left the Brit Oval an utterly vanquished side.

Invited to bat on a gloomy, damp morning, Surrey lost openers Scott Newman and Michael Brown inside 14 overs and with only 64 on the board.

Though Ramprakash was already well set, it was 22-year-old Matt Spriegel's impact batting at five that helped give the innings real momentum.

The pair combined beautifully adding 96 in 12 overs before Ramprakash holed out to long-on for 124, and having reached a 42-ball half-century, Spriegel then followed suit for 64.

With 306 on the board, scored at just over a run a ball, Surrey gained an early lift in the field when Kadeer Ali (7) nicked behind off paceman Stewart Meaker.

New Zealander Hamish Marshall (24) then chopped on against Barbadian left-armer Pedro Collins and the game was as good as done.

Irishman William Porterfield top-scored for the Gladiators with 42 before being sent back fully 21 yards by his former skipper Chris Taylor to be run out by Spriegel and, when big hitter Craig Spearman edged behind to go cheaply, the Brown Caps knew victory was inevitable.

As if to confirm it, Gloucestershire duly lost their last seven wickets for just 33 runs in a shade over 10 overs to surrender with 16.3 overs remaining.
