Day 4 of 4
Durham win by 5 wickets

Surrey vs Durham

LV= County Championship: Durham chase down 181 to beat Surrey

Scott Borthwick: Captured 6-70 with the ball, then hit 42 in Durham's run chase

Mark Stoneman: Made 67 at the top of Durham's order at the Oval

Durham moved to the top of the Division One table as they chased down 181 with five wickets to spare against Surrey at the Oval.

Scott Borthwick took career-best figures of 6-70 to bowl out the hosts for 229 in their second innings, then hit 42 to lead Durham's charge with the bat on the final day of the fixture.

The leg-spinning all-rounder shared in a 100-run stand with opener Mark Stoneman, who made 67 to add to his first-innings knock of 77, for the second wicket, a record for the county against Surrey.

However it wasn't all plain sailing for Paul Collingwood's side - they at one stage slipped from 107-1 to 126-4 after Borthwick was trapped lbw by Gareth Batty.

Yet Ben Stokes saw them over the line with an unbeaten 35, including hitting back-to-back boundaries off the bowling of Stuart Meaker to clinch Durham's third LV= County Championship win of the summer so far.

Surrey had begun on Monday morning on 164-6 and initially Gary Wilson and Batty flourished with the bat as they took their seventh-wicket partnership to 46.

Their hard work was undone in the space of three balls, though, as both well-set batsmen departed.

Teenage spinner Ryan Buckley had Batty lbw for 27 and then Borthwick dismissed Ireland international Wilson (26) with the very first delivery of the next over, courtesy of a catch by skipper Collingwood.

Borthwick then picked up Meaker for nine and Tim Linley for 19 - both caught and bowled - to end Surrey's resistance and leave Durham 73 overs to get the 181 they required, a feat they achieved with plenty to spare.
