Sri Lanka v South Africa: Kumar Sangakkara shines in first ODI

Kumar Sangakkara: Hit superb century in Sri Lanka victory

Kumar Sangakkara hit a stunning 169 as Sri Lanka claimed a crushing 180-run win over South Africa in the first one-day international in Colombo.

The former captain began slowly but upped his scoring rate considerably in the last 10 overs as the hosts posted 320-5 after being put in to bat by AB de Villiers.

The Proteas never looked like getting close to chasing that total down with only five batsmen getting into double figures as they slumped to 140 all out.

Opener Colin Ingram was bowled first ball by a Lasith Malinga yorker, while JP Duminy fell for 15 as wicket-keeper Sangakkara did brilliantly to get forward and take a thin edge off the bowling of Shaminda Eranga.

De Villiers and Alviro Petersen put on 44 to steady the ship, but the partnership came to an end when as De Villers (23) was bowled by Rangana Herath.

And just eight balls later Petersen (29) was gone with Sangakkara taking another catch, this time off Thisara Perera (3-31), who also claimed the wicket of Faf du Plessis (4).

Wickets

David Miller clattered Herath (3-25) for a six in the 20th over but just two balls later he was gone for 14 as he dragged onto his stumps off Tillakaratne Dilshan, who also removed Ryan McLaren (4).

It was 138-8 when Upul Tharanga produced a fine catch to dismiss Robin Peterson off Perera for 29 and Herath then removed Morne Morkel and Aaron Phangiso for ducks to end the innings.

Sangakkara had earlier come to the crease after Dilshan (10) was dismissed in the fourth over and set about building a second-wicket stand of 70 with Tharanga (33).

Mahela Jayawardene fell for 42 as he played a pull shot straight to deep midwicket off the bowling of Morkel, but he and Sangakkara had put on 74 for the third wicket and the latter was now hitting his stride.

He moved to his 16th ODI century with a four off Duminy and needed just six further overs to bring up his 150 as he teed off with a string of boundaries.

He lost fourth-wicket partner Lahiru Thirimanne as the middle-order batsman hit McLaren to Peterson, but he had added just 17 runs in their combination of 123 which came at a rate of almost nine an over.

Sangakarra had time to launch another mighty six - sixth of the innings - before he misjudged one and skied Phangiso to long-on to end his 137-ball innings.
