Sri Lanka vs Pakistan

Last Updated: July 14, 2009 12:30pm

Pakistan were always going to struggle to pull this one out of the fire after getting bundled out for 90 in their first inning. They responded well, bowling the hosts out for 240 and then started their second innings well as Fawad Alam scored a ton on debut. However, once captain Younus Khan went for 82, they suffered a massive collapse, leaving Sri Lanka a target of 171. The hosts easily chased it down for their first series win over Pakistan on home soil. Thank you for joining us and see you again for the third Test.

    Over 32 Malik 0-1-1-4

174-3 - Samaraweera pulls it away. It initially looks like it will go for four, but there's a fielder. Jayawardene takes a single to fine leg and the winning runs comes with a lovely drive for four. The two Sri Lanka batsmen jump for joy as they wrap up their first series victory over Pakistan on home soil.

    Over 31 Gul 0-0-4-0-0-0

168-2 - Gul could bowl the final over if things go Sri Laka's way. He starts with a couple of bouncers and then gives Jayawardene time to drive down the ground for four. The man at mid-off did the bowler no favours there. Sri Lanka need only three more runs.

    Over 30 Malik 0-6-W-0-0-4

164-3 - Shoaib Malik comes on for Younus. Seems everyone's getting a bowl in the final few overs. Sangakkara comes down the track and lifts it straight down the ground for a six. WICKET! Malik has the final laugh though. The off-breaker gets it to spin and draws the edge from Sangakkara. It goes straight to first slap. The Sri Lanka skipper departs with his team needing another 11 runs to win the match and the series. Thilan Samaraweera is off the park with a four over midwicket.

    Over 29 Gul 0-0-0-0-4-0

154-2 - Umar Gul comes back in a final throw of the dice by Younus Khan. He does well initially, but Jayawardene gets clever, opening the face of the bat and steering it between second slip and gully. The target is now below 20.

    Over 28 Ajmal 1-0-3-0-4-0

150-2 - Sangakkara pushes it to mid-on for one and his partner Jayawardene gets three to the same region. The Sri Lanka 150 and the 50-run partnership comes up with a Sangakkara sweep through midwicket for four.

    Over 27 Younus 3-1-0-0-0-0

142-2 - Younus is too straight and Jayawardene whips it through midwicket for three. The rest of the over yields a single to mid-on and a couple through midwicket.

    Over 26 Ajmal 4-0-2-1-1-2

136-2 - Sangakkara continues where Jayawardene left off the previous over, smacking it through the covers for four. Timing and placement in that shot. He then takes a couple to midwicket and a single to square leg while Jayawardene steers it wide of the slip. The over ends with a push to square leg. 10 runs from the over.

    Over 25 Younus 0-0-0-1-1-4

126-2 - Change in bowling sees Younus Khan come on for Abdur Rauf. Younus bowled well in the first Test, picking up two wickets in each innings. He starts well, conceding a couple of singles, but ends poorly, throwing down a wide one outside the off-stump which Jayawardene smacks away to the fence. The target is now below 50 runs.

    Over 24 Ajmal 1-4-1-0-0-0

120-2 - Sangakkara turns over the strike with one to deep point. Jayawardene is really taking the attack to Pakistan as he sweeps fine for four and then drives down the ground. A misfield allows them to take a single.

    Over 23 Rauf 0-1-0-0-2-4

114-2 - Sangakkara looks to go on the drive, but he gets a inside edge to fine leg. Jayawardene takes a couple down to fine leg before smacking it through point for a boundary.

    Over 22 Ajmal 0-1-2-0-1-2

107-2 - Sangakkara and Jayawardene are doing it quite easily - though to fine leg, deep backward square leg and through the covers. Doesn't look like that batting collapse will happen.

    Over 21 Rauf W-1lb-0-0-0-0

101-2 - WICKET! Pakistan get a breakthrough. Rauf gets it to take off. Warnapura is not sure whether to leave or go for the shot. He sticks out his bat and edges it through to wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal. Is this the start of the Sri Lanka collapse? We've seen several collapses in this game. Mahela Jayawardene takes a bye to the leg-side.

    Over 20 Ajmal 0-0-0-0-0-1

100-1 - Ajmal gets some some turn and Warnapura looks to get to the other end with a late cut shot, but he misses the ball. He eventually makes contact and gets a single wide of point. The run brings up Sri Lanka's 100. The umpires call for drinks at the end of the over.

    Over 19 Rauf 0-0-0-0-2-0

99-1 - Rauf keeps it outside the off stump. Sangakkara plays it to a deepish cover and then there's a yes and a no for a single. They eventually decide not to take the run. The skipper gets it to square leg and takes the target down to 72.

    Over 18 Ajmal 1-2-1-1-4-0

97-1 - Warnapura and Sangakkara continue to just pick off the runs, after all they are available at ease. The skipper is really looking like he wants to finish this asap, slapping it wide of mid-off for a boundary. The over ends with some excitment as Warnapura misses out on a late cut shot. Big appeal, especially from Akmal who is jumping up and down behind the stumps, but the umpire says not out.

    Over 17 Rauf 0-0-0-0-4-0

89-1 - A change of bowling as Abdur Rauf coes on for the first time in this innings. Big swing outside off from Sangakkara, it was unnecessary and he knows it, berating himself for the loose shot. This times he makes contact, it was a little closer to the body and he made no mistake, caressing the ball to the cover fence.

    Over 16 Ajmal 0-0-0-4-0-0

85-1 - Ooh, that was close as Warnapura tries to work the ball into the off side and nearly has his off stump clipped as the ball passes through. Cut away powerfully through the covers and Warnapura picks up four more which takes him past his fifty, a great knock.

    Over 15 Gul 0-0-0-1-1-0

81-1 - Umar Gul is brought back into the attack. Sangakkara turns the ball into the leg side and scampers through for a sneaky single with the bowler forced to do the fielding. Another single as Wanarpura drives into the covers were the fielder makes a half stop.

    Over 14 Ajaml 1-0-2-0-0-1

79-1 - A single as Warnapura nudges the ball into the covers. Clipped wide of mid on by Sangakkara and he picks up two. A cosoltation between the umpires as it appears Sangakkara as driven the ball into his toe and the ball bounces up and is caught by the silly point fielder. The umpire call for the third umpires assistance and replays shoe it clearly hits the ground. A single to end the over as Sangakkara works the ball wide of cover.
