Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 7 wkts

Sri Lankan clinched a seven-wicket victory in the second Test in Colombo following yet another spectacular batting collapse by Pakistan.

Debutant opener Fawad Alam and captain Younus Khan took the tourists into a position of strength on the third morning, with Pakistan cruising on 285 for one and a lead of 135.

However, the loss of Younus sparked a dramatic slump with Sri Lanka ripping out the last nine wickets for just 35 runs, spinner Rangana Herath taking five for 99 in 35 overs of spin.

It left Sri Lanka chasing 171 for a second successive Test victory, and they raced to their target thanks to a rapid half-century from opener Malinda Warnapura before veteran Mahela Jayawardene saw them home with 37 not out.

Imperious

Victory seals a first series win for Sri Lanka against their Asian counterparts, and comes after Pakistan snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in the first Test in Galle, when they were all out for 117 chasing 168 for the win.

There was little indication of the major shift in momentum as Alam continued to look imperious as he added to his overnight century, passing 150 before lunch on a pitch that was offering little to either seam or spin, with Ajantha Mendis in particular struggling to find any line or length.

However, after sharing in a record stand of 200 for the second wicket against Pakistan, Younus tried to reverse sweep a full toss from Tharanga Paranavitana, succeeding only in edging it behind for 82 just before lunch to give the hosts a much needed lift in the field.

When the second new ball was due, Kumar Sangakkara surprisingly tossed it to slow left-armer Herath but the response was immediate, trapping Mohammad Yousuf with one that went straight on.

Opener Nuwan Kulasekera (4-37) shared the new ball and for the second time in the match picked up four wickets as he found exaggerated inswing with the shiny sphere.

He trapped Misbah-ul-Haq, Kamran Akmal, Abdur Rauf and Saeed Ajmal all lbw with devilish deliveries in a fantastic spell, while Alam was the fifth man out when extra turn and bounce from a Herath ball caught him out.

Humbled

The spinner also bowled Shoaib Malik and had Umar Gul lbw with balls that went straight on as Pakistan were humbled for a second time in the match after being bowled out for 90 on the first day.

Warnapura, making the most of another chance after three failures in the series, carried the momentum through to the run chase as he put on 60 with Paranavitana inside 10 overs before his opening partner was bowled by Saeed Ajmal for 17 after tea.

He added a further 40 with Sangakkara, making 54 from 56 balls with seven fours and a six before Rauf had him caught behind, but only a collapse of Pakistan proportions would stop them.

The tourists' bowlers were unable to find the same rhythm their counterparts had earlier enjoyed, Sangakkara and Jayawardene dominating the attack as they maintained a scoring rate of more than five an over.

The pair added 60 before the captain fell four short of a half-century with just a further 11 required, cutting Shoaib Malik to Misbah for 46, and Jayawardene was joined by Thilan Samaraweera who hit the winning runs off spinner Malik to spark wild celebrations.
