Sri Lanka vs New Zealand
End of innings
The first really close match of the tournament. It was a cracker, played out in front of a full house. New Zealand's top order did well, setting up a score of 174 for 7, but when Dilshan and Jayawardene were batting that didn't look like nearly enough. Their partnership was broken at 80, and New Zealand forced their way back into the match. Dilshan fell for 76, and the match was tied in dramatic circumstances. Malinga was superb in the Super Over, right on target, and Dilshan's catch at long off sealed the game. Phew!
Super Over 2 - Ball 6
Sri Lanka win! Malinga fires down a yorker, which hits the foot and runs down to fine leg.
Super Over 2 - Ball 5
What a catch! Dilshan takes a superb catch under pressure at long off. Guptill had hit it superbly, but just didn't get the distance. New Zealand need 8 from the final ball.
Super Over 2 - Ball 4
Dropped by Sangakkara now! McCullum threw the bat at another wide one, getting a thin edge. Dropped, and they run a single.
Super Over 2 - Ball 3
Two byes! Malinga slung one wide outside off stump, the ball scooting under McCullum's flashing blade. The ball scuttles through Sangakkara's gloves, and they hurry back for two.
Super Over 2 - Ball 2
That is the yorker, and the best that Guptill can do is dig it out to midwicket. They take a single. New Zealand need 11 from 4.
Super Over 2 - Ball 1
Guptill slashes a full ball over point for two! Not quite the yorker from Malinga.
Super Over 1 - Ball 6
Perera paddle-scoops one high over short fine leg ... it doesn't reach the boundary, but some shoddy fielding from Mills allows them to take three. New Zealand will need 14 from their over.
Super Over 1 - Ball 5
Dilshan is greeted with a pinpoint yorker that he wears on the toe. They run a leg bye.
Super Over 1 - Ball 4
WICKET! Jayawardene is run out. He'd fetched the ball out to deep midwicket, and came back for the second. It was never on, and he's run out by miles.
Super Over 1 - Ball 4
Another wide! Southee fires another one very wide outside off, and that's another clear wide. The stress is obviously telling on the bowler, who remonstrates with the umpire over his call. Why? It was clearly wide.
Super Over 1 - Ball 3
Great running. Perera digs it out down the ground, and they rush back for two.
Super Over 1 - Ball 3
Southee fires one very wide outside off at the left-handed Perera. Rightfully called wide by the umpire.
Super Over 1 - Ball 2
Great again from Southee. Jayawardene digs a yorker out through the covers for one.
Super Over 1 - Ball 1
Southee starts really well, round the wicket to Jayawardene. The batsman flicks the yorker through his legs and down to long leg, where some committed fielding saves a boundary.
Over 20 - SL 174/5 (Thirimanne 5, Mathews 12)
It's a tie! Epic finish. Southee was superb, keeping the ball right up to the stumps. Thirimanne played a very brave shot to get the required boundary, stepping across his stumps and lapping Southee to fine leg. That took it to one needed from the final delivery. Thirimanne was struck on the body by a short one, and the batsmen took off. Franklin fired a shy at the non-striker's end, where Taylor was waiting. He dropped the ball, but in a total fluke the ball ricocheted off and hit the stumps. We're going to have a Super Over! This will be New Zealand's fourth Super Over in T20Is. They've won two before this, and lost one.
Over 19 - SL 167/5 (Mathews 10)
WICKETS! A dramatic over, as Dilshan falls! He started the over by slog-sweeping Franklin onto the grass bank beyond deep midwicket, but then took on the fielder after cutting out into the deep, and is just short as McCullum takes the bails off. Dilshan might've been safe, had he grounded his bat properly. The end of the bat was over the line when the bails came off, but it had popped up in the air. Perera slashed Franklin to deep point to take the runs required under 10, but the bowler then struck back with a slower ball that beat a slog and rattled the stumps. Sri Lanka need 8 runs from the final over, and New Zealand are still in this!
Over 18 - SL 154/3 (Dilshan 69, Mathews 9)
Great over from Tim Southee, and New Zealand are definitely still in this game. He came round the wicket to both batsmen, consistently firing down a full length on off stump and keeping them to just seven from the over.
Over 17 - SL 147/3 (Dilshan 64, Mathews 7)
Dilshan eases the pressure with a wild swipe to wide long-off that brings four. Franklin's changes of pace and length keep the batsmen to just singles until the final delivery, when Oram charges round the boundary to save two runs. Still, 10 runs come from the over, and that'll ease some Sri Lankan nerves. The stadium is packed now, with 90% of the people in supporting Sri Lanka. Great atmosphere.
Over 16 - SL 137/3 (Dilshan 58, Mathews 3)
Vettori completes a solid spell, being milked for singles by Dilshan and Mathews. Sri Lanka don't want to leave their charge too late here. Just four runs came from this over, and the required rate is now nine and a half to the over. New Zealand will certainly fancy their chances if Dilshan gets out. There's definitely some pressure building.
