Sri Lanka vs India
India win by 6 wickets
And they secure a bonus point, which could prove very handy when it comes to qualifying for the final. All three teams have won one and lost one, suggesting this is a well-balanced series and the final reckoning could be tight. This match was more or less over after 12.4 overs when Sri Lanka were 44 for 4, and although Mathews and Fernando took a couple of wickets each to expose India's inexperience and give Sri Lanka a chance, Sehwag was just too good and he really did deserve a hundred. It wasn't to be, but only because there weren't enough runs left for him to get. If Randiv deliberately overstepped with the final delivery then I have to say that's very poor sportsmanship indeed. Anyway thanks for your company, and do join us again on Thursday when Sri lanka take on New Zealand.
Over 35 Randiv 4b-0-0-1nb
171-4 - The field comes in to save the single, but Randiv's delivery keeps low and misses everything - four byes! That means India need just one to win and Sehwag doesn't want any no-balls or wides. He hits two balls straight to the fielder and then there is a no-ball! Sehwag smashes it back over the bowler's head for six, but it doesn't count because the no-ball took India to victory, and thereafter no runs actually count. So india win but Sehwag has to settle for 99 not out. Blimey.
Over 34 Mathews 0-4-1-0-0-0
166-4 - A clip off the pads down to fine leg for four takes Sehwag to 98, and also takes his strike rate to better than a run a ball, before a single to deep midwicket gets the commentator very excited indeed. A little too excited for a single in truth. Dhoni can't get either of his first two balls away, and so he defends the final delivery dutifully without any attempt at a run to make sure Sehwag has strike for the next over. Sehwag needs one, India need five.
Over 33 Randiv 0-6-1-0-1-1
161-4 - Just enough runs left for Sehwag to grab a century here, but he'll need to get the large majority of the runs required. He realises that of course, and slog sweeps Randiv over square leg for six. A single puts him on 93 with 12 runs required for victory, but crucially he gets another single off the last ball of the over to keep the strike. Sehwag needs six, Sri Lanka need ten.
Over 32 Mathews 0-1-1nb-1-6-4-1
152-4 - Mathews was the man who started that sudden collapse earlier on when he had Karthik caught at third man, and he's called on again here with Sri Lanka desperately needing another quick three wickets or so. However he's up against a Sehwag who has his eye in now, and after he's used up his bouncer early in the over, he tries to the slower ball to Sehwag who reads it early and deposits it over long-on for six. The next ball is on Sehwag's hips and is flicked away for four, so India are galloping towards their target now. Just 19 more required.
Over 31 Randiv 1-0-1-0-2-1
138-4 - Again there are too many singles on offer, and India duly exploit them. Five from the over without breaking a sweat, and India remain well on track for a bonus point. At this rate, Sri Lanka will have to win their last two games to qualify for the final, or hope that one of the other sides loses both of their games.
Over 30 Malinga 4-1-1-1-0-1
133-4 - India looking very good for the bonus point now as Malinga overpitches and Dhoni drives through extra cover for four. That was all bottom hand so it was amazing that he managed to manoeuvre that into a gap on the off side. That boundary early in the over means casual singles are fine for the remainder. India now need just 38 runs from 60 balls to secure a bonus point win. And on that note, it's drinks.
Over 29 Randiv 1-1-0-1-1-1
125-4 - Plenty of singles on offer now, and India are happy to settle for them because even the bonus point is in reach through that route. There are five from the over without any risks at all, which suggests that Sri Lanka might need to rethink their approach. Might as well risk being hit for a boundary and bring a few fielders up.
Over 28 Malinga 1-4-0-0-0-1
120-4 - Sangakkara has made a move with the match slipping away and brought back Malinga but a ball on the hips is tucked away by Dhoni down to the fine leg fence for four thanks to some laboured fielding dow there by Dilhara Fernando. The bowler's response is a sharp bouncer that surprises Dhoni who at the last moment drops his hands out the way.
Over 27 Randiv 1-4-4-1-0-0
114-4 - With Virender Sehwag at the crease India are always in charge. The batsman's approach is to go back and hit out into the off side and he's timed a stroke over the top of point for four, great shot. The very next ball his finds the fence again with a fine cut past short third man before giving Dhoni a run down mid-pitch on what Randiv is doing with his fingers.
Over 26 Fernando 1-0-0-0-1-0
104-4 - Dhoni has a captain's knock to play to steer India home here. He punches into the covers with no reward and then turns defensive with his wicket highly valued at this stage. The India skipper then jumps back to turn to the leg side for a single and his back leg has gone past the line of the stumps just missing the off stump.
Over 25 Randiv 2-0-0-0-1-1
92-4 - Dhoni turns one off his pads for a couple of runs fine on the leg side, and then survives an optimistic lbw appeal as he pushes forward at a straight one. He quite clearly got bat first but the Sri Lankans are slightly desperate and felt it was worth testing Asad Rauf after he was so generous with that Sharma dismissal.
Over 24 Fernando 2nb-0-1-1-0-0-0
98-4 - A no-ball is helped down to fine leg for a single by Dhoni, and then he and Sehwag both push into the covers for a run each. But then Sehwag gets tied down as Fernando runs in and hits the deck hard to keep the right-hander defending on the back foot.
Over 23 Randiv 0-1-0-0-1-0
94-4 - And so India have to rebuild once more, and there will be few risks taken against the spinner who is getting into his groove. Just a couple of singles, with Dhoni getting off the mark. The bonus point is still very possible - India need 77 from 17 overs at 4.5 per over to achieve that. Sehwag is obviously the key, as he so often is.
Over 22 Fernando 1nb-2-1-0-4-W-1
92-4 - Fernando oversteps, and for the second time in the match Sehwag is not out off a free hit. Earlier he was bowled by one, and here he chips it up in the air on the leg side and is actually dropped by Kulasekara. Obviously that doesn't matter, but the crowd are rather disappointed as some of them didn't realise what was going on. Anyway the two runs picked up take Sehwag to his half-century (58 balls, 7x4s), which will be a very satisfying one given his long run without reaching 50. He's had to work hard for this one as well. WICKET! Raina departs in disappointing fashion. Having just punched beautifully through backward point for four with exquisite timing, he holes out at deep midwicket with a bit of a nothing shot. Sure it was a pull shot but he wasn't trying to clear the ropes, and thus had no justification for hitting the ball in the air. Tharanga very nearly dropped it, but fortunately for him the ball bobbled onto his knees to give him a second bite of the cherry, and this time he sunk his teeth in. Captain MS Dhoni is the new man, but the batsmen crossed so Sehwag is able to whip to square leg for a single and keep the strike for the next over.
Over 21 Randiv 1-2-0-0-1-0
83-3 - Having been the standout fielder in this match so far and Sri Lanka's second highest scorer, Randiv now gets an opportunity to bowl. But now that he's performing his main duty the pressure is well and truly on Sri Lanka, to the extent that India cocky enough to steal a cheeky second run after Sehwag chips into the leg side. Randiv does well to find the right line and length to Sehwag to cramp him up after that, so it's a decent first over but Sri lanka desperately need a wicket.
Over 20 Fernando 1-4-1-1-1-1
79-3 - Fernando replaces Kulasekara as Sangakkara does his best to not allow the batsmen to settle against any particular bowler. Can't be long before we see Randiv because India's spinners certainly had some success and Sehwag is looking increasingly comfortable against pace. He whips through midwicket for four as Fernando's yorker strays a little too close to the pads, and then steals a single to point. Three more singles make it 26 from the last three overs, and the partnership is now worth 47 from 56 deliveries.
Over 19 Malinga 4-4-0-0-0-0
70-3 - Right here we go then: Sehwag has been patient for long enough but now he's starting to free his arms and the result is back-to-back boundaries - one back past the bowler, the other cut through backward point. However Malinga responds with all the wisdom we know him to have, varying his pace superbly to ensure that there's no bat on ball for the next couple of deliveries before the bouncer forces Sehwag to duck.
Over 18 Kulasekara 0-2-2-1-4-0
62-3 - Having got themselves set, Sehwag decides it's safe to get a move on and lofts the second ball over the covers before whipping the third to backward square leg. He looks for all money to have got his placement spot-on, but Suraj Randiv runs a good 40 yards to his right from deep midwicket and times his slide to perfection to save his side two runs. Nevertheless India are looking positive now and Raina chips a drive over mid-on for four. Just 109 needed for victory now, and if this partnership can continue for another ten overs then talk of the bonus point will hot up.
Over 17 Malinga 1-0-1-1-1-0
53-3 - Malinga's also back, so Sangakkara is using his bowlers in pairs instead of switching them around independently. Again there's a strong off-side field to Raina which forces him to hop across and nudge the ball to leg for singles. He's done well to find his feet after coming in under pressure and continues to provide solid support to a restrained Sehwag.
