Sehwag slays Sri Lanka

Opener blasts unbeaten 99 in six-wicket win

Sehwag: Brutal hitting

India got their Tri-series campaign back on track with an emphatic six-wicket victory over host nation Sri Lanka in Dambulla.

Chasing a mere 171, Virender Sehwag made mincemeat of the total with a run-a-ball unbeaten 99 as India crossed the line with over 15 overs remaining.

While Sehwag's innings will grab the headlines, a disciplined bowling performance earlier in the day ultimately laid the foundations for the victory.

Left-arm spiner Pragyan Ojha starred with figures of 3-36 as only Tillakaratne Dilshan (45) and Suraj Randiv (43) came out with any credit for the hosts.

Sri Lanka, after winning the toss, suffered a disastrous start as Upul Tharanga was clean bowled off the very first ball of the match from Praveen Kumar.

Things failed to improve thereafter, captain Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene departing in quick succession to leave Sri Lanka in early trouble on 23-3.

Brutal hitting

Ishant Sharma then picked up the wicket of Thilan Samawareera before Dilshan upped the ante in partnership with Angelo Mathews (15).

Dilshan cracked five fours before becoming Ojha's first victim five runs short of his half-century, and Mathews followed him back to the pavilion in the following over.

Number eight batsman Randiv at least propelled Sri Lanka up to a respectable score with a useful knock, however their final total never looked enough.

India, who were crushed by 200 runs by New Zealand in their opening game of the series, made hard work of it in their reply, losing three early wickets.

Mathews dismissed Dinesh Karthik (10) and Rohit Sharma (0) while Dilhara Fernando picked up Virat Kohli (0) to leave India toiling on 32-3 in the 11th over.

But with the aid of Suresh Raina (21) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (23 not out), Sehwag took the game away from Sri Lanka with a brutal display of hitting.

The powerful opener smashed 11 fours and two mammoth sixes to ensure India collected a bonus-point win.
