Sri Lanka vs India
INDIA WIN BY 46 RUNS
The visiting team claim Compaq Cup glory with a performance far from thorough. Their batting was right up there with the best but the fast bowlers and fielders deserve a fat talking to from coach Gary Kirsten. The day belongs to Tendulkar, who racked up his 44th(!) ODI ton. That's it from us. Thank you and cheers.
Over 46.4 Harbhajan 0-1-1-wd-W
273-10 - Mendis gets creative with a reverse-sweep but to no avail and then resigns to the standard drive to cover for one. Nuwan is left to accrue a one-bounce single to long-on. WICKET! Mendis dances down the track, throws the kitchen sink at it, misses, and Dhoni has all the time in the world to give Singh his five-for with a simple stumping.
Over 46 Nehra 0-0-0-0-3
270-9 - Nehra is back, and so are the yorkers. Mendis pokes about for a while before heaving three over midwicket. It's all over bar the shouting, really. Sri Lanka need 50 runs off 24 balls to win.
Over 45 Harbhajan wd-0-1-W-W-3-0
267-9 - Here it is. Sri Lanka call for the batting Powerplay. Bhajji kicks off his spell with a leg-side wide but tightens up his line to keep Nuwan on the defensive. WICKET! This may well be the end, as Kandamby backs away, goes on the cut and misses. The ball does the rest, the stumps are rattled and the Fat Lady begins to warm her voice, subject to some tail-end heroics from the hosts. Penultimate man in for Sri Lanka is Malinga, who has been known to offer a couple of lusty blows now and then. He needs more than a couple... WICKET! He can't even get one, instead offering the tamest of leading edges and the dolliest of catches to the bowler. The Fat Lady resumes her vocal thrusts as Mendis enters the arena, with Bhajji on a hat-trick. Mendis is brave, and goes on the sweep on the hat-trick ball for a handy three. Sri Lanka need 53 runs off 30 balls to win.
Over 44 Ishant 0-1-1-1-4-1
262-7 - Sharma is back for another spell and again starts with a cracking yorker. He tries again but over-pitches and gets a foot to the full-toss as the Sri Lankan duo scamper a single. Nuwan gets off the strike thanks to an overthrow of sorts - a ricochet off the non-striker's stumps. His back on strike in a flash though, as Kandamby shows faith in his new sidekick. Kulasekara obliges with four steered through backward point and India are slowly but surely falling apart at the seams here. Sri Lanka need 58 runs off 36 balls to win.
Over 43 Raina 2-1-W-0-1-1
254-7 - Kandamby offers himself room to the leg-side and cuts for two and then nudges a single to cover. WICKET! And there's the breakthrough! The part-timer has done the trick for India. Kapugedera looks to work one down to third man but only succeeds in feathering the faintest of edges to Dhoni, who holds on at the second attempt. Off he mopes and next in is Kulasekara, needing to play the knock of his life. Sri Lanka still have their batting Powerplay in the bank. Sri Lanka need 66 runs off 42 balls to win.
Over 42 Yuvraj 1-2-0-0-1-1
249-6 - Yuvraj drops short and Kapugedera smears two through long-on, where Ishant cleans up on the fence. A massive, hopeful, ultimately ineffective reverse-sweep follows as the left-hander-cum-right-hander takes a mild blow to the stomach. Sri Lanka need 71 runs off 48 balls to win.
Over 41 Raina lb-0-1-0-1-0-1
244-6 - The part-time spinner is back to bowl and goes up for the lbw shout but it's clearly not out as a reverse-sweeping Kapugedera has been struck well outside the line. That was a really quick over from Raina, not allowing the Sri Lankan duo anytime between deliveries to think about their gameplan. Sri Lanka need 76 runs off 54 balls to win.
Over 40 Yuvraj 1-1-0-0-0-2
240-6 - Nehra is too slow in fetching the ball at short third man, deems Yuvraj, who makes his frustration well heard. Kandamby misses a fat full-toss, trying to clip it through the on-side but instead having his back pad struck. Another full-toss arrives and this one is duly steered through midwicket for a hard-run two. Sri Lanka need 80 runs off 60 balls to win.
Over 39 Nehra 1-1-4-4-0-0
236-6 - Third man and fine-leg clean up respective singles, with Kandamby and Kapugedera quite happy strolling through for easy singles. The latter gets a rank half-volley on his pads and glances fine for the four to bring up the half-century partnership, off 11 overs. He goes again, this time through gully and it's four more. Nehra is spraying it all over the place here upon his return to the attack. Nehra bites back to a degree, ending the over with some awkward bounce that proves the beating of Kapugedera. Sri Lanka need 84 runs off 66 balls to win.
Over 38 Harbhajan 0-0-1-0-1-0
226-6 - It's pretty obvious that the current batsmen have decided to merely knock about the singles and be there at the death of the innings when they call for the batting Powerplay. Fans will hope they're not leaving it too late... Sri Lanka need 94 runs off 72 balls to win.
Over 37 Ishant 0-0-1-0-4-0
224-6 - Kandamby thinks about a quick single, then decides against it, then thinks again but ultimately decides to head back to his crease. Amidst all the indecision Dhoni has swooped in but failed with his attempted direct-hit. A pressure-releasing boundary follows, with Sharma dropping short and pitching it too far outside the off-stump to boot. Kapugedera pounces and laces it to the point fence for four. Sri Lanka need 96 runs off 78 balls to win.
Over 36 Harbhajan 0-1-1-1-1-0
219-6 - Kandamby adds to his wonderful 90-odd not out earlier in the series with his fourth ODI half-ton. It has been a methodical knock, strung with singles, but he really must think about a couple of lusty blows now if he hopes to end on the winning team today. Sri Lanka need 101 runs off 84 balls to win.
Over 35 Ishant 1-2-1-0-0-0
215-6 - It's a double bowling change from Dhoni as the strike ace returns to the fray too, jamming in a yorker to kick off his new spell. Yuvraj encures the wrath of his skipper with some lazy fielding on the point fence as Kapugedera runs hard for two, leaving the bowler to make up for some abject fielding with a string of wholesome dot balls, one of which balloons over the striker's head. Meanwhile, Dhoni has called his troops into a huddle for a bit of a talking-to, and rightly so, they've been rather lame over the past couple of overs. Sri Lanka need 105 runs off 90 balls to win.
Over 34 Harbhajan 0-1-1-1-2-0
211-6 - Cover is very shallow but third man is a touch too deep as Kandamby scampers a single, leaving his sidekick to work one away through square-leg. A run-out is certainly on the cards when Yuvraj swoops in from cover in the wake of mix-up in communication between the batsmen but he fumbles. Sri Lanka need 109 runs off 96 balls to win.
Over 33 Yuvraj 0-0-0-1-0-0
206-6 - Kandamby hauls out an array of strokes but can't find the gap through the on-side, eventually settling for a single behind square on the off-side. It's official - this one is going down to the wire - and overs like this one play right into Dhoni and company's hands. Sri Lanka need 114 runs off 102 balls to win.
Over 32 RP Singh 1-4-1-0-1-1
205-6 - Play resumes with the left-armer continuing his spell around the wicket to the right-hander. The angle is appreciable, as is the line. Kandamby rides Lady Luck for all her worth, fetching a fat edge through the vacant slip area to bring up Sri Lanka's 200. Meanwhile, Kapugedera is totally flummoxed by the slow off-cutter. Sri Lanka need 115 runs off 108 balls to win.
Over 31 Yuvraj 1-4-1-0-1-0
197-6 - Raina is yanked out of the attack and back comes the other part-time turner. He starts with a rank long-hop and Kandamby deliberately goes the aerial route through midwicket. Dropped! That appears to be his last scoring shot of the day as Pathan lines up the catch at deep mid-on. But he spills it and the bowler is spitting made, quite literally, there is gob all over the place. That could prove a costly missed opportunity for the defenders. Time will tell...
Over 30 RP Singh 1-1-nb-0-0-0-0
190-6 - The southpaw seamer's bad day at the office continues as he oversteps but then makes up for it as the free-hit goes unpunished. Raina then nearly cops some boot spikes to his right hand as the non-striker makes a comical attempt to get back to his crease. The end result is a missed opportunity for the run-out for India and a rather economical over from the plighted bowler.
29 Raina 1-0-0-1-1-1
187-6 - The part-time spinner screams through another sub two-minute over, as Kapugedera and Kandamby make do with a string of singles on offer through the on-side.
