India beat Sri Lanka by 46 runs

Sachin Tendulkar's 44th one-day international century helped India lift the Compaq Cup with a 46-run triumph over Sri Lanka in the final.

Tendulkar, the leading run scorer in both Test and one-day history, hit 138 off 133 balls in India's total of 319-5 at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh bagged 5-56 as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 273 in reply despite a battling 66 from Thilina Kandamby.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat first as his side looked to avoid a repeat of their 139-run drubbing against the same opponents in the group stage of the week-long triangular tournament, also featuring New Zealand, on Saturday.

Tendulkar shared stands worth 95 and 110 with Rahul Dravid (39) and Dhoni (56) for the first and second wickets respectively to set India on the way to a formidable total.

Tough conditions

In oppressive heat and humidity, the 36-year-old batted for 46 overs despite requiring a runner after developing leg cramps in the latter part of his innings.

Tendulkar struck 10 fours and a six before spinner Ajantha Mendis (1-70) trapped him lbw as he attempted to reverse sweep.

Yuvraj Singh remained unbeaten on 56 off 41 balls as India plundered 85 runs in the last 10 overs.

Sri Lanka's run chase began strongly as opening pair Tillakaratne Dilshan and Sanath Jayasuriya (36) put on 64 in 7.5 overs.

But Harbhajan bowled Dilshan (42) and followed up by having Mahela Jayawardene caught-and-bowled for one to derail the hosts.

Sri Lanka lost regular wickets thereafter until a seventh-wicket stand between 70 between Kandamby and Chamara Kapugedera briefly revived their hopes.

However, Suresh Raina (1-26) removed Kapugedera (35) and Harbhajan cleaned up the tail as Sri Lanka were all out in 46.4 overs.
