Sri Lanka vs Australia

Tharanga ton flattens Aussies

Malinga takes 5-28 as Sri Lanka bounce back to form

Redemption: Tharanga scored his first century since returning from a drugs ban

Uncorked: Bollinger finally ended Sri Lanka's opening stand in the 26th over

Sri Lanka got their first win of the one-day series against Australia as Upul Tharanga's century helped them to a 78-run success in Hambantota.

Tharanga, who is making his comeback in this series after serving a three-month drugs ban, hit 111 in Sri Lanka's total of 286-9.

And Lasith Malinga claimed 5-28 as Australia were all out for 208 in reply, Mike Hussey top scoring with 63.

The win reduces Sri Lanka's deficit to 2-1 heading into the final two games of the series, which take place at Colombo's RPS on August 20 and 22.

Tharanga and Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan laid the platform with an opening stand of 139 in 25.1 overs after Australia opted to field first.

Dilshan was the aggressor, reaching his half-century from 51 balls, while Tharanga needed 63 deliveries to reach the same landmark.

Doug Bollinger broke the partnership when Dilshan pulled a short ball straight to Hussey on the boundary but Kumar Sangakkara joined Tharanga in an 81-run, second-wicket alliance.

Sangakkara took the initiative with two sixes and three fours in his 37-ball 49 before Bollinger trapped him lbw.

Bollinger completed figures of 4-42 with the scalps of Dinesh Chandimal (4) and Tharanga, whose 139-ball contribution featured 12 fours and was the 12th ODI ton of his career.

Mahela Jayawardene's 36 saw Sri Lanka up to a competitive final total.

Malinga dismissed Shane Watson (5) in the third over of Australia's run chanse and debutant seamer Shaminda Eranga (2-38) accounted for Brad Haddin (5) and Ricky Ponting (22) as the tourists slipped to 52-3 in the 13th over.

Captain Michael Clarke and Hussey briefly revived the innings with a fourth-wicket stand of 71.

But Malinga returned to remove Clarke (46) and, although Hussey advanced to his 35th ODI half-century, he lost partners regularly.

The left-hander became Malinga's third victim and the end came quickly thereafter, Malinga yorking the final two batsmen to seal the victory in the 45th over.
