S Africa vs Sri Lanka
Morne Morkel named Man of the Match
It was the opening bowlers who got things off to a rocketing start for South Africa and for his four for 10 in six overs, Morne Morkel is named man of the match. Lonwabo Tsotsobe also chipped in with three for 19, while Robin Peterson added two for five. Thank you for joining us, we'll be back on Saturday for the second ODI in East London.
Over 21 Peterson W
43-10 - WICKET! Peterson gets the lbw. It looks plumb and umpire Erasmus raises the finger. The South Africans have to put the champagne on ice for the moment as Fernando goes for the referral, but it's in vain and just a rather desperate attempt to keep the game going, but it's all over. That means Sri Lanka record their lowest-ever score in ODI history, beating the previous record of 55. A comfortable 258-run win for South Africa.
Over 20 M Morkel 1-2-0-0-W-0
43-9 - WICKET! Morkel gets his fourth as Kulasekara goes on the hook, but fails to middle it and gets caught at backward square leg by Peterson. APPEAL! There's an appeal for a catch off the final ball as Mendis takes a wild swing, but there was no contact and Morkel appears to be the only one appealing. Umpire Doctrove waves the appeal away.
Over 19 Peterson 0-1-1-0-0-1
40-8 - APPEAL! Mendis looks for the slog and misses as he's struck on the back leg. There's a big appeal, but umpire Erasmus says not out. The South Africans go for the referral and it shows the batsman just got outside the line of off stump. Very tight call. It does show, however, that Mendis is not planning to drag this game out and is going to look for runs.
Over 18 M Morkel 0-0-0-0-2-0
37-8 - Morne Morkel now into the attack in place of his brother. He's bowled brilliantly tonight after an indifferent Test series where he struggled with no balls. Just the two from the over as Kulasekara pulls him on the leg side where the man on the boundary does the fielding. It's now just a matter of going past the 55 - Sri Lanka's lowest score.
Over 17 Peterson 0-0-0-0-1-0
35-8 - Kulasekara doing well just to hang around now and try and play the game much like a Test match fighting for survival. It's going to be a bit different for Mendis who really isn't one to play memorable innings with the bat.
Over 16 A Morkel 0-0-1-0-0-0
33-8 - APPEAL! Morkel strikes Kulasekara on the pad and the South Africans go up in unison for the appeal. Billy Doctrove gives him out, but Kulasekara immediately asks for the review. The replays show it was comfortably going over the top of the stumps and the decision gets overturned.
Over 15 Peterson 0-0-1-W-0-0
33-8 - WICKET! A truly awful shot gets Malinga out as he tries to slog-sweep the spinner out the ground, but makes no contact as the bails go tumbling. He really should have been trying to do a better job of staying with Kulasekara. This game is surely now done and dusted.
Over 14 A Morkel 0-0-0-1-0-0
32-7 - Albie Morkel comes in and straight away beats the bat with a peach. Kulasekara then plays uppishly to one outside off, but it falls safely in the covers. Good over by the older Morkel brother who concedes just the one as the teams take a drinks break.
Over 13 Steyn 1-0-0-1-0-1nb-0
31-7 - Steyn is looking for rough up Malinga and peppers him with some short balls. The umpire calls a no ball as Steyn bowls one too many bouncers and Malinga may have thought it was a free-hit as he took a swing at the extra ball, but it wasn't a no ball for overstepping so he would have been surprised had he gone out there.
Over 12 Tsotsobe 0-0-0-0-2-2
28-7 - Kosala Kulasekara manages to get a few runs away as he pushes through mid-wicket for two before getting another couple on the off side. It will be interesting to see how Malinga goes as he's naturally aggressive and will be looking for a few big hits.
Over 11 Steyn 1-0-0-W-0-0
24-7 - WICKET! It's almost too easy now as Nuwan Kulasekara tries to fend a short ball away and it loops straight to Faf du Plessis who takes the catch. Sri Lanka now in danger of getting their lowest ever score as the record of 55 is under threat.
Over 10 Tsotsobe 0-0-0-2-1nb-4-0
23-6 - Nuwan Kulasekara tucks one away off his pads for two before Tsotsobe oversteps. The free-hit is cut and it's a top edge which flies over the slips for four. That might give him a bit more confidence, but he goes on the slog the very next ball and it's a wild swing and miss.
Over 9 Steyn 1wd-0-0-2-0-0-0
16-6 - Dale Steyn comes into the attack now, but starts with a wayward delivery down the leg side. That eases the pressure somewhat, but there's still a long way to go for Sri Lanka. Kosala drives through the covers, but doesn't quite middle it as the batsmen come back for two.
Over 8 Tsotsobe 0-1-0-0-W-0
13-6 - WICKET! Another goes and it's the big fish of Jayawardene who tries to cut Tsotsobe over the infield, but it's straight to Faf du Plessis at point. What a position Sri Lanka have found themselves in. The two Kulasekara's are at the crease now and they surely just need to put something together to at least restore some pride to the visitors.
Over 7 M Morkel 0-1-0-0-0-0
12-5 - The pressure continues to mount on these Sri Lankan batsmen. One more wicket here and South Africa are into the bowlers. There's surely no way back for the Sri Lankans here.
Over 6 Tsotsobe 0-2-0-0-0-0
11-5 - Jayawardene plays a drive on the up and there are cries of 'catch it', but it flies past backward point. It seems the former skipper is going to play his shots and with such a huge target to chase, he may just have to.
Over 5 M Morkel 0-0-0-W-0-W
9-5 - WICKET! What a dream start for South Africa. The dangerous Sangakkara plays a loose cut which was too close to his body and he gets healthy edge which goes straight to de Villiers. WICKET! Mathews goes as he tries to work one off his pads, but he gets a leading edge and it loops straight into the hands of Robin Peterson. Sri Lanka in dire straights now.
Over 4 Tsotsobe 0-4-W-0-1wd-0-0
9-3 - WICKET! Tsotsobe gets one to swing back into the right-hander and Chandimal gets an inside edge which crashes into the stumps. The experiment of bringing up the inexperienced Chandimal doesn't work and the old pairing of Jayawardene and Sangakkara find themselves having to dig Sri Lanka out of a deep hole.
Over 3 M Morkel 0-0-0-0-0-0
4-2 - Sangakkara knows he has to drop anchor here and bat the majority of the innings if Sri Lanka are to come close to this target. The pressure, however, continues to build as Morkel completes back-to-back maidens for the home side.
