Day 3 of 5
South Africa win by an innings and 18 runs

S Africa vs Pakistan

South Africa seal series sweep by thrashing Pakistan at Centurion

South Africa: 3-0 series victory consolidated their world number one status in Tests

Dale Steyn: helped South Africa to innings victory on day three

Dale Steyn claimed 4-80 as South Africa completed a 3-0 series win over Pakistan with victory inside three days at Centurion.

Pakistan, following-on, were bowled out for 235 in their second innings to slump to defeat by an innings and 18 runs.

Resuming at 14-1 on the third morning, Pakistan required a further 239 just to make South Africa bat again.

Younus Khan edged Steyn to slip in the eighth over of the day but that was the only wicket to fall in the morning session as Azhar Ali (27) and Imran Farhat (43) forged a 54-run stand for the third wicket.

Run out

The run out of Ali after Farhat declined to come back for a second run sparked a post-lunch collapse that saw Pakistan reduced from 93-2 to 114-6.

Farhat edged behind off Kyle Abbott (2-39) and Rory Kleinveldt (2-33) dismissed Misbah-ul-Haq (5) and Asad Shafiq (6) in consecutive overs.

Sarfraz Ahmed (40) and Saeed Ajmal (31) extended Pakistan's resistance into the evening session with a 69-run, seventh-wicket partnership.

Steyn removed both in quick succession and Abbott - who claimed 7-29 in Pakistan's first innings of 156 on day two - took his match tally to nine with the wicket of Ehsan Adil (12).

Abbott's match haul of 9-68 is the third best figures by a South African on debut.

Left-arm spinner Robin Peterson (1-32) had the final word, trapping Rahat Ali lbw for 22.

The result was a record 50th Test win as captain for Graeme Smith and consolidates South Africa's position at the top of the International Cricket Council Test rankings. Smith's men have won their last six series and are unbeaten in 15 Tests, a run that dates back to the start of 2012.

Pakistan's tour continues with two Twenty20s followed by a five-match ODI series.
