Steyn shines in Proteas win

South Africa bowler seals 10-wicket haul to topple Black Caps

Steyn: Ten wickets

Dale Steyn completed another five-wicket haul to lead South Africa to a comprehensive 358-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test at the Wanderers.

Man-of-the-match Steyn followed up his first innings figures of 5-34 by taking 5-59 to see the Proteas home in Johannesburg.

Resuming on the fourth day on 57-3 chasing a mammoth 531, the tourists were quickly in trouble when Scott Styris was dismissed by Steyn having failed to add to his overnight score of 16.

The Kiwis' innings continued to fall apart with Brendon McCullum and Michael Papps also losing their wickets before lunch.

The impressive Steyn picked up his third scalp of the innings when he had McCullum caught at gully by Herschelle Gibbs for 26 and then Papps edged to AB de Villiers at second slip off the bowling of Jacques Kallis for five.

Harris strike

Jacob Oram and Daniel Vettori helped the Black Caps limp to 148-6 at lunch, but Oram was out shortly after the interval without improving on his score of 40, chipping a Paul Harris delivery to Andre Nel at mid-on.

Steyn collected his fourth wicket of the innings when he had Iain O'Brien caught at short leg by Hashim Amla and his 10th of the match when he bowled Chris Martin between bat and pads.

The injured Shane Bond did not bat, meaning nine wickets were enough to secure a comfortable triumph for South Africa.

The second match in the two-Test series begins at Centurion Park on Friday.
