S Africa vs New Zealand
End of Innings
This match was a slow-burner. A low-scoring ODI in which bowling dominates, and batting requires poise and technique. New Zealand were out of it at 105 for 7, but their lower order fought really, really hard. Watling, again, had kept the middle order together. Once he departed, McCullum kicked things off with a bolschy innings, continued by Mills. All the while, Franklin remained and when it came down to it, he played the vital hand for New Zealand. Finally, New Zealand have arrived!
Over 45.4 - NZ 209/9 (Franklin 47, McClenaghan 0)
New Zealand win! What a knock from Franklin. Such fight, such calm under pressure. He takes them close with an ice-cold ramp shot over the keeper, and then ends the game with a crunching square-drive. Superb cricket.
Over 45 - NZ 199/9 (Franklin 39, McClenaghan 0)
Drama! Franklin is carrying the hopes of New Zealand upon his shoulders, and playing an absolute blinder of a knock. He thumps Steyn down the ground for four, and then slashes one just past a diving de Kock for back-to-back boundaries. A glide through point brings two, and Franklin then takes a single to leave McClenaghan to survive Steyn's final delivery ... which he does! New Zealand need just 10 to win.
Over 44 - NZ 188/9 (Franklin 28, McClenaghan 0)
WICKET! McLaren strikes to break the stand! It's a terrific delivery too. A reverse-swinging yorker is too much for Mills, and he's bowled for 26. McClenaghan looks a true No. 11 with the bat in his hand, but he clings on tenaciously to see out the over. It's all up to Franklin now.
Over 43 - NZ 187/8 (Franklin 28, Mills 26)
The field isn't tight enough to stop New Zealand's batsmen from taking three singles from Peterson's over. The stand is worth 47, and just 22 are needed for New Zealand to pull off a remarkable win.
Over 42 - NZ 184/8 (Franklin 27, Mills 23)
A potentially crucial review goes New Zealand's way! Steyn charged in at Mills, unleashing an offcutter that caught the batsman on the pad. Umpire George disagreed with the appeal, turning it down, but Steyn asked for a review. The replay showed the ball just clipping the bails, but not by enough to overturn the decision. A fired-up Steyn retaliates by unleashing a 147kph thunderbolt that flashes past the bat, and in a dramatic over the third umpire is needed once again to adjudicate upon a run out. It's not out, and now things are getting really tight.
Over 41 - NZ 179/8 (Franklin 24, Mills 22)
With the Powerplay completed, the field spreads and Robin Peterson is called back into the fray. He operates round the wicket to both batsmen, and varies his pace really well to restrict them to two runs in the over.
Over 40 - NZ 177/8 (Franklin 23, Mills 21)
This is turning into a really bellicose, stubborn partnership. After a pair of singles behind the wicket, Mills faces up to Steyn once more and strong-arms a boundary to midwicket as the bowler slips fractionally short. The stand is now worth 37, and 32 are needed, from 60 deliveries, for New Zealand to win.
Over 39 - NZ 171/8 (Franklin 22, Mills 16)
Kleinveldt comes in for the under-fire Tsotsobe, the burly allrounder tempering Mills' attacking instincts in a tight over. Well, it could have been a little tighter: he has to bowl an extra delivery after spraying one down the leg side, but apart from that lapse his accuracy means that just three runs come from the over.
Over 38 - NZ 168/8 (Franklin 21, Mills 15)
The gulf between New Zealand's approach in facing Steyn and Tsotsobe is apparent as the pace spearhead seizes back the momentum with a maiden. Steyn is on target with every single delivery, giving Mills nothing.
Over 37 - NZ 168/8 (Franklin 21, Mills 15)
Mills, it would appear, doesn't have quite the same respect for Tsotsobe as he does for Steyn. The left-armer's very first delivery is shellacked over long-on for a muscular six. The shot takes the required runs under 50, and things get even better for New Zealand as Tsotsobe offers up a gentle cutter down the leg side that Franklin glances away for four. That's his first boundary, and it takes us to 13 runs from the over.
Over 36 - NZ 155/8 (Franklin 17, Mills 6)
Dale Steyn returns to action as the Powerplay begins. He's too good for Mills, beating the bat twice in the over despite using an old ball. After five dot balls, Mills heaves to leg to take a single off the sixth, keeping strike. New Zealand don't need to do anything risky during this Powerplay. In fact, they should probably just see it off, even if they score very few runs.
Over 35 - NZ 154/8 (Franklin 17, Mills 5)
This is calm stuff from Franklin. There isn't much pressure to score quickly - thanks, in large part, to Nathan McCullum's feisty knock. Franklin cuts out all risk in this over from McLaren, batting out five deliveries before picking up on a slightly leg-side line to work the sixth through midwicket for a couple. Will he play some shots, now that the Powerplay is due?
Over 34 - NZ 152/8 (Franklin 15, Mills 5)
The New Zealand innings continues to meander, but it appears Franklin is starting to find his timing now as he punches three runs down the ground off Kleinveldt. Mills is known to swing the willow on occasion, too, but he is content to take singles for the moment. New Zealand need just 57 to win. If these two bat for another 10 overs, things could get very interesting.
Over 33 - NZ 147/8 (Franklin 11, Mills 4)
WICKET! McCullum's fightback is ended by McLaren. The ball swung in and hit his pad, and Umpire George gave it out. McCullum wasn't happy, and asked for a referral ... The replays showed, however, that the ball would have clipped the leg stump and so the decision stayed with the on-field umpire. Bowling at Kyle Mills, McLaren over-steps and a free-hit is top-edged over the 'keeper for three. Rudderless batting from New Zealand.
Over 32 - NZ 140/7 (McCullum 24, Franklin 9)
Kleinveldt struggles a little with his lines against the right-hand/left-hand combination of McCullum and Franklin, but very nearly end his over with a wicket! He sprays down an off-side wide at McCullum, and fires two down the leg side when Franklin has the strike. Franklin tried to work a length delivery into the leg side to end the over, but scooped the ball towards Tsotsobe at mid-on. The fielder made good ground, but did he get his fingers cleanly underneath the ball? It's very tight, but the benefit of the doubt goes with the batsman.
Over 31 - NZ 136/7 (McCullum 23, Franklin 9)
McCullum can play his shots against the spinners as well! Peterson's introduction is greeted with a skip down the track and a bunt over mid-on. It wasn't a wild heave, but he made sure to hit it well enough to clear the infield. From then on, both he and Franklin are happy to work the ball around with minimal risk.
Over 30 - NZ 129/7 (McCullum 17, Franklin 8)
Kleinveldt returns to the attack, and has cause to inquire about two potential lbw dismissals in his over. Both Franklin and McCullum are ruled not out, however, and New Zealand need 80 from the last 20 overs to win. At the moment, the three wickets needed by South Africa looks like the more likely scenario.
Over 29 - NZ 126/7 (McCullum 16, Franklin 8)
McCullum curbs his attacking instincts after the brief interval, as both he and Franklin take singles off Tsotsobe. As he often does, Tsotsobe has actually stitched together really good figures without looking too threatening. He remains a very effective bowler in shorter formats.
Over 28 - NZ 122/7 (McCullum 14, Franklin 6)
McCullum continues to play his shots, and the required run rate dips below four to the over. He has his third boundary as McLaren hits a short length outside off, bat flashes at ball, and ball flies down to third man, beating the fielder. That'll take us to drinks at Boland Park.
