Somerset vs Notts

LV=County Championship: Nick Compton guides Somerset to draw

Nick Compton: Guided hosts to comfortable draw

Nick Compton gave a reminder of his impressive powers of concentration as Somerset comfortably avoided defeat on the final day of the LV=County Championship match with Nottinghamshire at Taunton.

The hosts were made to follow on after losing their final first innings wicket without addition to the overnight score of 188-9, Samit Patel dismissing Steve Kirby to finish with figures of 3-40.

But Compton ensured there were no further alarms by scoring an unbeaten 70 in a second innings total, which had reached 141-2 when bad light and then torrential rain brought a premature end to proceedings at 3.25pm.

Bad weather had been forecast for the start of the day, but there were no interruptions before lunch as Notts looked to press home their advantage.

Kirby was caught off bat and pad pushing forward to the second delivery of the day and, with a blustery wind scattering the clouds, Somerset knew they had a fight on their hands as Chris Read enforced the follow-on, with a lead of 190.

Patient

Marcus Trescothick took 22 balls to get off the mark, but the Somerset captain helped Compton see off the new ball with a patient innings of 39.

Compton had a scare on 30 when he played a delivery from Steve Mullaney firmly off his hip. Notts appealed when the ball struck James Taylor at short-leg and rebounded to wicketkeeper Read, but the umpires ruled it had touched the ground before hitting the fielder.

It was 68-0 at lunch and the total had progressed to 79 when Trescothick was caught behind attempting a flashing cut off Harry Gurney.

Compton went on to reach his half-century off 135 balls, with six fours, while Chris Jones helped take the score to 105 before fending at a ball from Ajmal Shahzad and edging through to Read.

James Hildreth declined to let the game situation inhibit his natural game and hit three fours in moving to 16 by the time the weather closed in, while Compton had batted for three hours and 28 minutes, facing 166 balls, in a model exhibition of application.
