Somerset vs Essex

Spoils shared at Taunton

Rain the only winner in the West Country

Trescothick: Unbeaten on 42

Somerset are still searching for their first win of the LV County Championship Division One campaign after rain scuppered their hopes of beating Essex.

LV County Championship - Division One Taunton Somerset 387 (J C Hildreth 73, Z de Bruyn 73, N R D Compton 72, P D Trego 71 no, D D Masters 4-83) & 100-0 dec v Essex 353 (B A Godleman 106, D D Masters 50, M K Munday 4-105) Somerset (10pts) drew with Essex (10pts)

No play was possible during any part of day three and the 50 overs of action on the final day failed to yield a result.

There was faint hope of forcing a result when play resumed on time on day four with Essex on 252-5 in response to Somerset's first innings total of 387.

Ryan ten Doeschate and James Foster were dismissed in the morning session before opening bowler David Masters, batting at number nine, produced an impressive display of clean hitting.

Supported by Tim Phillips, the Essex pair quickly moved the total onto 321 before the slow left-arm spinner was caught by Nick Compton off Charl Willoughby for 22.

Masters brought up his half-century before Somerset leg-spinner Michael Munday (4-105) wrapped up the Essex innings on 353.

However, another lengthy delay after lunch stalled any progress and although the players returned briefly in the final session, Somerset reached 100-0 before stumps was called.

Marcus Trescothick ended unbeaten on 42 and Arul Suppiah 47 not out as both teams took 10 points from the match.

Day Three

Somerset and Essex were left frustrated as wet weather prevented any play on day three at Taunton.

Rain began to fall at around 9am and persistent drizzle thereafter eventually led umpires Barry Dudleston and Jeff Evans to abandon proceedings for the day at 4.30pm.

The match is finely poised with Essex on 262-5 in response to Somerset's first innings of 387.

Day Two

Billy Godleman hit his first century for Essex on day two of their LV= County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton.

The former Middlesex batsman made 106, including 12 fours and three sixes, as his side reached 262-5 by the close in reply to Somerset's 387.

Leg-spinner Michael Munday claimed 3-100 to put a brake on the visitors' progress after Godleman's partner Alastair Cook had contributed 41 to an opening stand of 89.

The sometime England skipper departed after edging to Marcus Trescothick at slip off Damien Wright, with Godleman then combining with John Maunders (22) and Jaik Mickleburgh as the visitors passed the 200 mark.

Godleman eventually perished to a Munday long hop with the score on 203, having faced 196 deliveries

Earlier, Peter Trego finished unbeaten on 71 as Somerset added 59 to their overnight total of 328-7, sharing a last-wicket stand of 39 with Charl Willoughby.

Day One

James Hildreth overcame an injury sustained in the warm-up to hit 73 as Somerset ran up 328 for seven on the opening day against Essex at Taunton.

The batsman slipped while playing a game of touch rugby and had to go to hospital for stitches in a knee after being caught by a team-mate's studs.

He dropped a place down the order to five as a result but still produced an attractive innings, hitting 12 fours from 110 balls.

Nick Compton (72) and Zander de Bruyn (73) also made significant contributions, the home side having earlier lost Arul Suppiah (7) and skipper Marcus Trescothick (19) cheaply.

Making his home debut, a confident-looking Compton reached his half-century off 81 balls and hit seven fours, while de Bruyn hit 10 boundaries having faced 144 deliveries.

However, Somerset's innings subsided from 286 for four after Hildreth departed, as figures of three for 54 from David Masters ensured Essex stayed well in the hunt.
