The Cidermen, already runners up in the Friends Provident t20 this summer, remain in contention for a maiden County Championship title heading into the final round of fixtures.

And they will have the chance to cap a memorable season with an appearance in the final of the 40-over competition against Warwickshire at Lord's next Saturday after Essex were suffocated by sheer weight of runs.

Somerset skipper Marcus Trescothick led the way with 79 off 62 balls after winning the toss and choosing to bat first at Taunton.

The boundary was breached regularly throughout the home side's innings as a middle order of Peter Trego (33), Nick Compton (55), James Hildreth (46), Jos Buttler (36) and Arul Suppiah (42no) all contributed to a score of 312-6.

Early strikes

Faced with such a formidable target, Essex made the worst possible start to their run chase when Mark Pettini chipped the first ball, bowled by Alfonso Thomas, straight to mid-off.

And when Alastair Cook (10) and Ryan ten Doeschate (22) both departed in the sixth over - Cook brilliantly held by Trescothick at short cover and Ten Doeschate run out - the visitors looked doomed at 33-3.

But rapid contributions from Grant Flower (39) and Matt Walker (39), followed by a sixth-wicket stand of 68 from 43 balls between James Foster (58) and Adam Wheater (36) kept them in contention.

Thomas (2-47) returned, firstly hitting Foster with an accidental beamer and then having the fired-up Essex skipper caught at long-on in the 27th over.

And the game was up for the visitors when Wheater went lbw to Murali Kartik (2-40) six deliveries later.

Peter Trego (1-35) bowled David Masters (2) with the third ball of the 29th over to end proceedings, Essex all out for 217.
