An unbeaten century from Vikram Solanki proved crucial for Surrey as they saw off Scotland by 14 runs in Edinburgh.

An unbeaten century from Vikram Solanki proved crucial for Surrey as they saw off Scotland by 14 runs in Edinburgh.

Solanki struck 10 boundaries on the way to a total of 109 from 113 balls as the visitors made 237-5 at the Grange, a total Scotland couldn't pass despite 59 from Calum MacLeod.

MacLeod had earlier given Scotland a good start to their fielding when he raced to catch out Jason Roy (11) in the second over, but Steven Davies (54) and Solanki combined to put on 119.

Gordon Goudie finished with 3-39 as he added Zander de Bruyn (11) and Gary Wilson (23) to his earlier dismissal of Roy.

However Solanki carried on right through to the end, finishing up with four sixes and six fours to leave Scotland facing a challenging total.

The hosts started inauspiciously with two runs from their first two overs with the bat and Matthew Cross was bowled out for nine by Jonathan Lewis.

Fellow opener Freddie Coleman departed for 32 after being caught out at mid-wicket following a slow ball by Chris Tremlett, who soon accounted for Ewan Chalmers.

When Preston Mommsen fell soon after to Gary Keedy, the Scots were 82-4 and looking set to fall well short of their target.

But MacLeod and Majid Haq (36 not out) gave them some hope despite the latter having to retire hurt at one stage. He did return to the crease but a final-over target of 20 runs proved too much as Scotland finished on 223-8.
