ICC World Twenty20: Netherlands deny Scotland in qualifying play-off

Wesley Barresi: Netherlands batsman dominated run chase

Scotland missed out on a place at the 2014 World Twenty20, losing their play-off against the Netherlands for the final spot by eight wickets.

Set a target of 148 in Abu Dhabi, the Netherlands eased home with 13 balls to spare thanks to Wesley Barresi's 75 not out.

No 3 Barresi hit eight fours and a six in his 47-ball innings and shared half-century stands with both Ben Cooper (40) and Michael Swart (30no) to turn the run chase into a formality.

Scotland had earlier been indebted to a third-wicket partnership of 111 between Matt Machan (61) and Michael Leask (58) after they came together with their team in crisis at 1-2 in the second over.

Aberdeen right-hander Leask was in particularly aggressive mood, launching five sixes in his 46-ball contribution.

A final total of 147-6 at least gave the Scots something to bowl at, but despite Neil Carter removing Stephan Myburgh for a duck early in the Netherlands' run chase, it never looked like being enough.

Second chance

The result was a relief for Netherlands captain Peter Borren after his side missed a chance to qualify on Wednesday when they lost to United Arab Emirates.

Borren said: "It's always a bit tricky with a small target, you're not sure how about to go about it. Today, 147 was a good score on this deck and the boys backed themselves, played beautifully and managed to get us home.

"I'm very glad we made it through but I feel for Scotland."

Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer said: "I thought they batted outstandingly.

"We were happy with 147 - going by the results in the previous games we would've taken that at the start of the day

"The tournament has been great. I can only thank our guys for all the hard work they've put in, and say well done to the Netherlands.

"We've just got to get through next time, it's as simple as that."

Full line-up

The line-up for the fifth edition of the World Twenty20 - which will take place in Bangladesh from March 16 to April 6 next year - is now complete.

The 10 full ICC members are joined by six teams from the qualification tournament; Afghanistan, Ireland, United Arab Emirates, Nepal, Hong Kong and the Netherlands.
