Day 1 of 1
Essex win by 59 runs

Scotland vs Essex

Yorkshire Bank 40: Scotland well beaten by Essex in Edinburgh

Tim Phillips: Took 3-21 to restrict Scotland's chase

Preston Mommsen: Was highest-scoring batsman in the match

Tim Westley scored 63 as Essex claimed a comfortable 59-run win over Scotland in a rain-shortened Yorkshire Bank Group B clash in Edinburgh.

Westley was the leading batsman as the visitors compiled a total of 217-7 a reduced allotment of 29 overs after losing the toss and being put in to bat.

Scotland made a slow start to the chase and despite big scores from Freddie Coleman (64) and Preston Mommsen (70 not out), they could get on terms with the required run rate and finished on 158-4, with Tim Phillips snaring three of the wickets.

Essex openers Westley and Mark Pettini put on 79 in just 12 overs before the latter was brilliantly caught on the boundary by Dewald Nel off the bowling of Michael Leask for 47.

Jaik Mickleburgh contributed 22 to the cause before he was caught by Mommsen at point off Moneeb Iqbal, while Graham Napier hit back-to-back sixes before departing for 17.

Nel's third over, the 25th of the innings, went for 26 as skipper James Foster (29 off 15 balls) hit two sixes, one of them off a no-ball, and two fours.

Westley lasted until the penultimate over while Sajid Mahmood blasted 20 from the last five balls of the innings, with two sixes and a four, to lift his side well beyond 200.

Scotland needed a strong start but David Masters trapped Calum MacLeod lbw for a first-ball duck and then Phillips took centre stage, cleaning up Matthew Cross (9) and Richie Berrington (9) cheaply.

The partnership of Mommsen and Coleman at least offered some encouragement for the home side, but the runs were not coming quickly enough and Coleman became Phillips' third victim with two overs remaining, by which time Scotland had no chance of victory.
