Kolkata romp to Royal rout

Gambhir and Kallis blast Rajasthan

Kallis (left) and Gambhir: smashed an unbroken 152-run stand

Kolkata Knight Riders thrashed the Rajasthan Royals by nine wickets in their Indian Premier League clash in Jaipur on Friday.

Gautam Gambhir and Jacques Kallis struck unbeaten half-centuries in an unbroken 152-run stand off 17.1 overs as the visitors chased down 159 with nine balls to spare.

Skipper Gambhir smashed 75 off 44 balls while Kallis (80 off 65) became the highest run-scorer in the tournament so far with 187 from three matches.

Rahul Dravid had earlier given the Royals a solid start with two crucial stands, firstly one of 27 with Amit Paunikar and then putting on 52 with Ashok Menaria.

But Yusuf Pathan dismissed Dravid for 35 and then accounted for Menaria (27) to leave the hosts on 79-3 in the 12th over.

Shane Watson hit a 13-ball 22 before he was bowled by Shakib Al Hasan just as he looked to be getting into his stride.

But Ross Taylor and Johan Botha kept up the pressure, adding 35 off 20 balls in a late run surge, to close the innings out on 159-4 and leave the visitors needing eight an over.

Kolkata lost Manvinder Bisla to a run out in the second over but Kallis and Gambhir both proceeded to blast their way to 50s.

Gambhir raced to his ninth IPL half-century in only 28 balls as Kolkata flew past 100 in the 12th over and soon after Kallis brought up his third straight IPL 50 off 46 deliveries

Siddharth Trivedi looked to have brought the partnership to an end when Gambhir holed out to deep mid-wicket off in the 15th over

But, because there were only three fielders inside the circle, umpire Aleem Dar signalled a no-ball and the skipper survived.

The pair then rattled off the remaining runs with a flurry of boundaries to overhaul the hosts and seal the victory in style.
