Pune vs Kings XI

Indian Premier League: Kings XI Punjab cruise past Pune Warriors

Adam Gilchrist: The King XI Punjab captain celebrates his side's win

Gurkeerat Singh: The Pune Warriors man took a sensational catch

Kings XI Punjab started their Indian Premier League campaign on a winning note as they dispatched the Pune Warriors with a comprehensive eight-wicket victory at the Subrata Roy Sahara stadium.

Pune won the toss, but their decision to bat first backfired as they ended up mustering a score of just 99 from their 20 overs to leave them without a win in 11 matches and bottom of the early new season standings.

And the visitors didn't take long to rattle off their runs with an impressive 13 fours and a single six on their way to an historic opening game win.

Manan Vohra did the job with an unbeaten 43 while Mandeep Singh chipped in with 31 runs as they reached their target with 7.4 overs remaining.

After suffering a disappointing 22-run loss in a low scoring game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Pravin Amre's side had been hoping for an improved batting display.

Show stoppers

However, the Kings' seemers stole the show through excellent discipline sending half of the home team back to the pavilion at the score of 38 in the opening 10 overs.

Abhishek Nayar was Pune's leading run scorer with a meagre 25, but the all-rounder eventually ran out of partners as pacers Praveen Kumar and Azhar Mahmood took two wickets each.

Gurkeerat Singh also produced one of the catches of the day as he dived towards his left to hold the ball in mid-air at fine leg from Ross Taylor's wild swing.

Kings had never won their opening game in the previous five editions of the IPL, but the Adam Gilchrist-led side had owner Preity Zinta dancing on the sidelines after a no-ball finally got them over the winning line.
