Big Bash League: Perth Scorchers edge past Hobart Hurricanes

Scorchers fight back

Yasir Arafat (C): Produced some tight bowling late on to see Perth home

Perth Scorchers staged a late fightback to claim a six-run victory over Hobart Hurricanes in their Big Bash League clash at the WACA.

The visitors had looked set to successfully chase down Perth's total of 153-7 after a quick-fire 32 from former England batsman Owais Shah.

But the Hurricanes lost four wickets in 10 balls during the 18th and 19th overs, leaving the lower order too much to do at the very end.

Nathan Coulter-Nile (3-15) and Yasir Arafat (2-27) were responsible for the brilliant death bowling, which lifted the Scorchers to second place in the league table.

The outlook was looking a lot less positive for the hosts earlier in the innings as solid knocks from Ben Dunk (28) and Travis Birt (22) kept the Hurricanes ahead of the required run rate at the halfway point.

The boundaries then dried up for a while but Shah smashed a six and two fours in the 16th over to bring the chase firmly back on track.

However, Shoaib Malik's dismissal for 26 triggered a collapse which saw Jonathan Wells (1) bowled by Arafat before Coulter-Nile trapped Shah and Ben Laughlin (1) lbw, although both deliveries may have been drifting down the leg side.

That left Aiden Blizzard (6 not out) and Ben Hilfenhaus (0no) needing 14 off the last over, which was bowled expertly by Arafat.

Earlier, brothers Shaun and Mitchell Marsh had both starred in a Perth innings which featured four run outs, the former hitting 40 and the latter 33 after the home side had won the toss and elected to bat.

It was Ashton Turner who provided all the impetus at the end of the innings, however, smashing an unbeaten 32 from just 17 balls, including 14 from four deliveries at the end of the penultimate over.
