Pakistan vs Sri Lanka
Pakistan win by 11 runs, and take a 1-0 lead in this 5 match series. Kasul Perera got some good support from Dilshan and Chandimal in pursuit of the target of 323, but they lost their way somewhat in the middle of the innings. Facing almost impossible odds, spinners Prasanna and Senanayake combined to bring their team to the brink of victory before Pakistan wrapped things up in the final over. Ajmal and Hafeez both did well to dry up the runs although Junaid picked up three vital wickets. Mohammad Hafeez was instrumental in setting up the Pakistan score of 322 with his knock of 122, and he is the Man of the Match. The teams meet again on Friday in the second ODI, again starting at 11h00 GMT. With that, goodnight.
Over 49.4 - SL 311 all out - Lakmal 1 (1)
WICKET! Malinga run out (Baliwal Batti/ Umar Akmal) 0 (0). They had to keep Prasanna on strike but the second was never on. Malinga had to get back into the striker's crease after being sent back, but was well short. WICKET! Prasanna c Sharjeel Khan b Junaid Khan 42 (25). That ends this stunning tail end comeback as Prasanna goes for the lofted off drive. The boundary was gaping behind mid off, up in the circle, but Sharjeel plucked it out of the air to give his team victory. Junaid 5.4-0-44-3.
Over 49 - SL 309/8 - Senanayake 43 (23) Malinga 0 (0)
WICKET! Senanayake c sub (Anwar Ali) b Sohail Tanvir 42 (24). An amazing over starts with a clean hit over mid wicket for 6. A high full toss evades the keeper for 4 byes, but there is a smile on the bowler's face as Senanayake is caught at deep cover - but only after the substitute had taken it on the second grab. 14 needed off the final over. Tanvir 10-0-69-1.
Over 48 - SL 296/7 - Prasanna 40 (21) Senanayake 34 (19)
Wow! They are still going for it! Senanayake bashed the first ball over mid wicket, and Prasanna smashed another short ball over square leg for 6 and then played a beautiful lofted drive to the cover boundary. 26 needed off the last 12 balls. Baliwal 7-0-57-1.
Over 47 - SL 281/7 - Prasanna 30 (18) Senanayake 29 (16)
Can they do it? Fortune favouring the brave as first Prasanna plays classically over mid off, but follows up with an inside edge that somehow misses the stumps. Senanayaka also has a lucky boundary as Ajmal fluffs a pretty ordinary piece of fielding at short third man. 42 needed off the last 18 balls. Tanvir 9-0-60-0.
Over 46 - SL 267/7 - Prasanna 21 (14) Senanayake 24 (14)
Ajmal had the upper hand in that over, although Prasanna did connect with one mighty blow over mid wicket. That ends his contribution for the night. Ajmal 10-0-48-0.
Over 45 - SL 260/7 - Prasanna 15 (10) Senanayake 24 (12)
Now Prasanna comes to the party with a splendid pull for 6 to bring up the 250. His encore, however, is a thick edge to wide third man and he ends the over by steailng the bowling with a risky single. Tanvir 8-0-46-0.
Over 44 - SL 249/7 - Prasanna 4 (4) Senanayake 24 (12)
Senanayake greets Ajmal with another cracking boundary behind point, but the run out looks on the cards every time the ball does not go to the boundary. Ajmal 9-0-42-0.
Over 43 - SL 241/7 - Prasanna 2 (2) Senanayake 18 (8)
Some fine shots by the #9 batsman, including three successive boundaries. is there still some hope? Junaid 5-0-42-2.
Over 42 - SL 227/7 - Prasanna 1 (1) Senanayake 5 (3)
WICKET! T Perera c Misbah-ul-Haq b Bilawal Bhatti 6 (6). Oh dear, there goes Perera as well. After a textbook straight drive he chips one to the skipper at extra cover. New man Senanayake ends the over with a well placed off drive. Bilawal 6-0-42-1.
Over 41 - SL 217/6 - T Perera 2 (4) Prasanna 0 (0)
WICKET! Mathews c Sohail Tanvir b Junaid Khan 31 (32). Mathews has no option but to go for his shots, but this mis-timed off drive is in the air and easilty taken at mid off. Junaid 4-0-28-2.
Over 40 - SL 214/5 - Mathews 31 (32)
WICKET! Chandimal run out (Saeed Ajmal) 46 (50). Chandimal wanted to steal the strike off the last ball, but Ajmal got across to a short mid wicket position quickly and threw the stumps down from side on. That ends the Power Play as well. Ajmal 8-0-34-0.
Over 39 - SL 197/4 - Chandimal 37 (46) Mathews 23 (29)
Chandimal starts the over with a painful blow to the knee as Tanvir follows him down the leg side from wide of the crease. Chandimal receives some treatment before play continues, but he ends the over in style with a lovely square cut. Tanvir 7-0-35-0.
Over 38 - SL 195/4 - Chandimal 37 (44) Mathews 22 (26)
Ajmal's doosra slides past both the flailing bat of Chandimal and the gloves of Akmal to go for four byes. Mathews ends the over in more authentic style, flicking gracefully over mid-wicket. 10 in the over, but they need more. Ajmal 7-0-21-0.
Over 37 - SL 185/4 - Chandimal 36 (40) Mathews 17 (24)
Tanvir returns for the PowerPlay, starting his spell from around the wicket. Afridi makes a good stop off the last ball to frustrate Mathews. Tanvir 6-0-30-0.
Over 36 - SL 180/4 - Chandimal 33 (36) Mathews 15 (22)
A quiet start to the Power Play, which is now enforced. Ajmal 6-0-15-0.
Over 35 - SL 177/4 - Chandimal 32 (34) Mathews 13 (18)
DRINKS will be taken. A much better over for Sri Lanka as Mathews helps a wretched leg side delivery to the fine leg boundary, and Chandimal makes room and goes inside out over cover for six. Two wides - one of them a bouncer - gave the batsmen some extra ammunition. Baliwal 5-0-31-0.
Over 34 - SL 161/4 - Candimal 25 (31) Mathews 6 (15)
Some spark at last as Chandimal fetches a length ball outside off and deposits it over long on. Still, the 9 scored in that over will see the required rate inching up again - it is now already over 10 to the over. Afridi 7-0-30-2.
Over 33 - SL 152/4 - Chandimal 17 (28) Mathews 5 (12)
Boundaries still seem to be a distant memory as the batsmen can do little more than work the ball around. Bilawal 4-0-15-0.
Over 32 - SL 146/4 - Chandimal 13 (24) Mathews 3 (10)
Chandimal survives an LBW shout off the last ball. Umpire Cloete says not out, but Pakistan ask for the REVIEW. it was missing leg, so bang goes Pakistan's referral. Not that it should matter much with the stranglehold they are exercising at the moment. Afridi 6-0-21-2.
