Notts vs Sussex

County Championship: Ed Joyce hits double-ton to put Sussex in charge

Ed Joyce: Hit an unbeaten 204 to put Sussex firmly in control against Nottinghamshire

Chris Jordan: Took 4-61 to put Notts under pressure

Ed Joyce hit an unbeaten double century as Sussex dominated Nottinghamshire on day three of their LV= County Championship Division One match.

Resuming on 129, skipper Joyce moved on to an unbeaten 204 before declaring his side's first innings closed on 506-5, while Rory Hamilton-Brown celebrated his first Sussex hundred since September 2009.

The pair started the day with the score on 363-4 and Joyce was reprieved, by David Hussey at slip, when on 138, while Hamilton-Brown was also put down by Riki Wessels, at deep midwicket, when on 96.

They pushed their stand on to 232, a new county fifth-wicket record against Nottinghamshire, before it was eventually broken when Hamilton-Brown, playing his 100th first-class innings, was caught down the leg side for 113 by Chris Read, giving Luke Fletcher his third victim of the innings.

But Joyce then powered on to reach the second double-hundred of his career, coming from 239 balls faced, having hit 24 boundaries and three sixes, and the 34-year-old eventually declared after Samit Patel had been taken for 26 from what turned out to be the final over of the innings.

Slumped

Sussex paceman Chris Jordan, the leading wicket-taker in Division One, then took his number of dismissals to 41 as he picked up the first four wickets to fall as Nottinghamshire slumped to 106-4 in reply before closing on 223-6, still 283 runs adrift.

Wessels made 49 before a mistimed pull off Jordan ballooned to Monty Panesar at mid on and Steven Mullaney, opening the batting for the first time in his career, was bowled for 30.

Patel and Hussey were both blown away cheaply by Jordan, each falling to well-directed short-pitched deliveries, with Patel fending off to short leg for three and the Australian edging behind for just six on his return to Trent Bridge.

Jordan might have had a fifth wicket but Chris Nash put down a chance at third slip off James Taylor, who made Sussex pay by ending the day on 81 not out.

Panesar winkled out both Read, for 45, and Paul Franks for just a single during the closing stages as the home side ended the day on the back foot and with it all to do to save the game.
