A magnificent catch on the long-on boundary by Kieron Pollard propelled Somerset into the Friends Provident t20 final at the expense of Nottinghamshire.

Pollard's heroics came as the Outlaws chased a revised target of 152 from 16 overs in the rain-hit semi final clash at the Rose Bowl.

The West Indies all-rounder ended Samit Patel and David Hussey's 64-run partnership when he leapt high to pluck what looked a certain six out of the air and send Patel packing.

Shortly afterwards, with Notts poised on 117-4 after 13 overs, rain brought an early end to proceedings with the 2006 finalists just four runs short in the Duckworth-Lewis calculations.

Earlier, a batting masterclass from Marcus Trescothick and a dazzling knock from youngster Jos Buttler had propelled Somerset to 182-5 after Outlaws' skipper Hussey elected to field.

Trescothick smashed the ball to all parts on his way to a 28-ball 60 including nine fours and two sixes before he was finally dismissed by a wonderful delivery from Graeme Swann.

Zander de Bruyn (four) and James Hildreth (19) departed soon after to leave Somerset reeling on 118-5 after 16 overs.

Buttler however took centre stage smashing 55 runs from 23 balls and adding 75 with Pollard to hand Somerset the initiative.

Swann and Ali Brown looked to make early inroads into their revised target in reply and after two overs they had reached 23 without loss.

But Swann fell on 11 to Pollard and Alfonso Thomas, the leading wicket-taker in the competition, then removed Brown and Alex Hales in the same over to leave Nottinghamshire reeling on 47-3.

It was left to Patel and Hussey to drag their side back into the match and going into the 13th over the Outlaws were ahead according to Duckworth-Lewis.

But Pollard's catch changed everything and when the rain came Somerset were assured their showdown with Hampshire Royals in the final.
