Notts vs Middlesex

Tame draw at Trent Bridge

Ollie Rayner adds 4-67 to his first innings 143 not out

Andrew Strauss: hit seven fours in a useful knock

Ollie Rayner: Middlesex nightwatchman finished 143 not out

Andrew Strauss enjoyed some valuable time in the middle ahead of next week's first Test as Middlesex' Championship match against Nottinghamshire finished in a draw.

Middlesex were set a nominal target of 298 to win in 51 overs after lunch but on a slow Trent Bridge wicket with some uneven bounce, a successful run-chase never looked likely.

Strauss and Sam Robson batted for 35 overs to reach 87-0 for the visitors before both sides agreed to a draw, with the England skipper making 43 and Robson 39.

Strauss batted for 132 minutes and finished with seven fours from 113 balls, while Robson hit four boundaries in facing 99 balls.

Earlier, Notts had declared their second innings closed on 174-7, Steven Mullaney (73) and Michael Lumb (55) both making half-centuries, while Middlesex off-spinner Ollie Rayner added 4-67 to his first innings 143 not out.

Day Three

Ollie Rayner struck a maiden County Championship century and added two late wickets to boost Middlesex's hopes against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Rayner, sent in as nightwatchman at number five the previous evening, finished unbeaten on 143 in a Middlesex first-innings total of 300-9 declared.

He was given good support by Dawid Malan in a 119-run stand for the fifth wicket, while Notts seamers Harry Gurney (3-47) and Andre Adams (3-75) each finished with three wickets and received support from England pair Stuart Broad (1-79) and Graeme Swann (2-55).

Nottinghamshre slumped to 22-3 in their second innings by the close, a lead of 145 heading into the final day.

Off-spinner Rayner (2-11), introduced in the fourth over, accounted for Alex Hales and Swann either side of paceman Steven Finn (1-6) removing Neil Edwards.

Day Two

England captain Andrew Strauss failed with the bat again as Nottinghamshire took control of their match with Middlesex.

After dropping three chances and taking two catches in Nottinghamshire's first innings, Strauss was then caught behind for two off Harry Gurney - his third single-figure score in four first-class innings this summer.

Nottinghamshire batsman Michael Lumb made 162 to help the hosts post 423 all out, dispatching 23 fours from 309 balls, while Steven Mullaney hit 60 before becoming one of Steven Finn's four victims.

Strauss fell in the fourth over of the Middlesex reply and Andre Adams - the leading wicket-taker in the country - picked up two more wickets, including captain Chris Rogers in the penultimate over of the day, as the visitors closed on 51-3, 372 behind.

Day One

Alex Hales made an unbeaten 71 as Nottinghamshire reached 132-1 on a rain-shortened opening day of their LV= County Championship clash with Middlesex at Trent Bridge.

Although play started on time, just 42 overs were possible before the action was suspended at 2.30pm with the home side firmly in control.

Hales shook off the disappointment of being omitted from the latest England Lions squad to stamp his authority on proceedings in an unbroken century stand with Michael Lumb (51 not out).

Nottinghamshire won the toss and opted to bat but were one wicket down without a run on the board as Steven Finn bowled Neil Edwards for a duck with his first delivery of the match.

But Hales and Lumb gradually adapted to the swing and seam movement on offer, posting the fifty stand in the 15th over and bringing the 100 up in the penultimate over before lunch.

Both batsmen had passed their half-centuries by the time play was called off and need to add just three more runs to record Nottinghamshire's highest stand of the season.
